Internal rotation is a tool, not a rule! Let’s stop making cute names for it as if we should all push our legs closed to push. Internal hip rotation DOES matter and can influence space side to side at the pelvic outlet. But somewhere along the way, a useful biomechanical concept got turned into another recipe: “Close the knees” = open the outlet ❌ And that misses why internal rotation matters in the first place. We need internal rotation for LIFE. For walking. For the femur to move well in the hip socket. For the back of the pelvis and pelvic floor to yield. Yes, for birth. That is very different from simply forcing someone’s knees together during pushing and calling it internal rotation. Just look at the shape of the sacroiliac joint. Its primary movement is front to back, what we call nutation and counternutation. There simply isn’t a huge amount of widening available side to side. Again, don’t get me wrong, that small amount of movement matters. But one of the biggest ways we can influence space at the bottom of the pelvis during birth is front to back, and hip flexion is a major part of that. Try what I show in the video. Explore internal rotation with your hips less flexed. Then move into deep hip flexion and try it again. Notice how your options change. As the femur moves deeper into flexion, the relationship between the femur and hip socket changes. Simply forcing the knees closer together does not magically bypass the anatomy of the joint or guarantee more pelvic space. This is why I have found internal rotation is much more useful for birth when someone actually has ACCESS to it because we trained that movement during pregnancy, not because we force their knees together during pushing when they are already deeply flexed. Can the femur move well in the hip socket? Can they flex, extend, internally rotate and externally rotate? Then during birth, we can allow the hips to find flexion and work with the unique needs of that birth.

We train for marathons, rehearse before a big performance, prepare for the baby. But when it comes to birth, we’re often told... your body knows what to do. Just trust it.” And while your body is absolutely capable of incredible things, preparing for birth doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong by getting ready. You can build mobility, practice changing positions, work on strength, balance, and coordination. You can't predict exactly how your birth will unfold, but more options can be really valuable when the moment comes. You can stack the cards in your favor. You can take control of the controllable. If you want to train for birth, head to the link in my bio and I'll send you a free class you can start using today to train your body. From one of our pros the other week: "Another 'butter birth' in the books! I am going helping my clients with these skills, seeing their eyes light up in labor when they connect the feelings in their bodies to what we practiced... and another baby birthed with less than 10 minutes of pushing. The hospital staff and providers weren't taking her seriously and were caught off guard" #firsttrimester #pregnancymovement #pregnancyexercise

In honor of Valentine’s Day, here’s a partner move to have ready for the big day 💕 I love these moves not just for the amazing release they provide. But also for the connection they foster. Partners often feel confused and overwhelmed with how to support. Practice simple but profoundly impactful moves together with Body Ready Birth! Good birth partners want to support you, but they’ve never done this before! But let me tell you a secret, they have something that your Doula and nurse cannot replace (doulas and nurses are important for other reasons). They have love and affection for you that fosters connection, that in turn fosters oxytocin release which facilitates a more easeful birth. So do not discount the power of a connected and supportive birth partner. Not sure if they’re ready? Learn together with our body ready birth program. If you’re expecting, what do you hope your partner can help with for your upcoming birth? Let’s get some ideas going for each other! #birthpartner #birthsupport #birthteam #birthplan #laborprep #laborsupport
