Surry Hills has 139 men for every 100 women. But don't get excited, girls. In Surry Hills and Darlinghurst, about one in six couples living together are two men (ABS, 2016 Census: 17.5% of couples in Darlinghurst, 16.3% in Surry Hills). Across Australia, fewer than 1 in 100 couples are same-sex. Good for them. The most male suburbs and towns in Australia (5,000+ people, Census 2021, men per 100 women): Newman, WA: 150 (a BHP iron ore town, Mount Whaleback) Junee, NSW: 144 (Junee Correctional Centre, a men's prison) Surry Hills, NSW: 139 Darlinghurst, NSW: 137 Campbell, ACT: 127 (RMC Duntroon and the Defence Force Academy) And where are all the girls? Erina, NSW: 79 (46.5% of locals are 65 or older) Bethania, QLD: 81 Woollahra, NSW: 81, and 76 among 25 to 34 year olds Women live longer: across Australia, at 85 and over, there are 63 men for every 100 women. Overall, Australia has 97. In ten years, Melbourne gained 114,000 Muslims, and three in four of them settled in the city's outer growth areas. Greater Melbourne: 144,651 Muslims at the 2011 Census, 186,654 in 2016 and 258,250 in 2021. The busiest cluster is still in the north, around Broadmeadows and Meadow Heights. But 76% of the rise landed in the seven outer growth-area councils (Wyndham, Melton, Hume, Whittlesea, Mitchell, Casey, Cardinia), which took 57% of Melbourne's overall population growth. Tarneit went from 1,654 to 8,480. Wollert, from 48 to 4,570. Sydney has the biggest Muslim community of any city: 208,148 in 2011, 329,566 in 2021. Its heart hasn't moved: Lakemba (61% of residents in 2021) and Bankstown (31%). But it's spreading out too: Sydney's outer growth-area councils took 47% of its rise (against 40% of all residents' growth), and in the south-west Edmondson Park went from 20 to 2,290. In both cities, the heart stays put, and the growth goes where the new homes are. 2026 Census estimates for every suburb at Microburbs: microburbs.com.au/research/census-2026 Sources: ABS Census 2011/2016/2021 via Microburbs (religious affiliation: Islam, by neighbourhood (SA1), all years counted on 2021 boundaries with the ABS correspondences; city and suburb totals as published by the ABS; religion is an optional Census question).
