One of Melbourne's five new Metro Tunnel stations was built for a suburb that doesn't exist yet. 🚇 Arden station, in North Melbourne, opened with the Metro Tunnel on 30 November 2025. We drew an 800 m circle around each of the five new stations and counted the people living inside (Census 2021): State Library: about 34,000 Parkville: about 16,000 Town Hall: about 13,000 Anzac: about 12,000 Arden: about 6,500 55% of the land in Arden's circle is industrial: rail yards, freeway ramps and warehouses. About 35 people live on it. It was meant to look very different. In October 2022 the Victorian Government announced new Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's hospital campuses at Arden, "linked by the Metro Tunnel". In the May 2024 Budget they were dropped: the government said the work to protect the hospital's sensitive medical equipment from electromagnetic interference from the nearby Metro Tunnel would be significant, causing delays and costing much more. The upgrade went to the existing Parkville sites instead. Now the plan is homes: up to 20,000 people in the Arden precinct by 2051. In July 2026 the state approved two towers with 540 apartments on Arden Street. The master developer for the government's own land is still being chosen (two bidders left). The station is ready. The suburb is 25 years away. Will Arden be the next Docklands? Yes or no? Method: straight-line 800 m circles from each station; ABS Census 2021 mesh-block counts, shared by the area inside each circle; land use is the ABS mesh-block category. For almost fifty years, South Australia stretched from the Southern Ocean to the Timor Sea. 🗺️ How Australia's borders were drawn, 1788 to today: 1788: Britain claims everything east of 135°E and calls it New South Wales (Van Diemen's Land included). 1825: Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) becomes its own colony; NSW's line moves west to 129°E. 1829: Britain claims the west: the Swan River Colony, later Western Australia. 1836: South Australia, from 132°E to 141°E, south of 26°S. 1851: Victoria separates, along the Murray River. 1859: Queensland separates. The NSW land left up north no longer touches the rest of NSW. 1861: South Australia's border moves west to 129°E. 1862: Queensland's border moves west to 138°E. 1863: That northern block is annexed to South Australia, which founds Palmerston (now Darwin) in 1869. 1901: Federation. Six colonies become one country. 1911: South Australia hands the Northern Territory to the Commonwealth, which promises a railway to Darwin. The first trains reached Darwin in 2004. NSW hands over the land for the capital, Canberra. 1915: Jervis Bay joins the capital's territory, giving it a way to the sea. The lines were drawn by people in London, over land Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had lived on for more than 60,000 years. Which state got the worst deal?
