In 2006, people born in England were the biggest migrant group in every state and territory. By the 2021 Census, England led just three. Biggest overseas-born group, 2021 Census (runner-up in brackets): NSW: China 247,595 (England 231,385) Victoria: India 258,193 (England 174,552) Queensland: New Zealand 208,572 (England 191,731) Western Australia: England 196,885 (New Zealand 75,591) South Australia: England 95,248 (India 44,881) Tasmania: England 19,283 (China 6,830, then Nepal 6,219) Northern Territory: Philippines 6,391 (England 5,053, India 5,045: eight people apart) ACT: India 17,203 (England 13,245) One catch: the Census counts England, Scotland and Wales separately. Add them up and Britain (266,608) would still top NSW, ahead of China. You lost money today, and you didn't spend a cent. 💸 Prices rose 4.0% in the year to August (ABS). On $10,000 sitting in an account that pays nothing, that's about $385 of spending power a year (about $1.05 a day). On $50,000: about $1,923 a year, or $160 a month. No bill, no receipt. That's why inflation gets called a silent tax. In Melbourne, $100 of shopping in mid-2016 costs about $135 today. Australia-wide since then: bread +39%, milk +47%, electricity +49%, petrol +60%. And $100 from 1990 now buys what about $39 did then. Is the bank keeping up? In August the typical everyday account paid 0%, an online saver 3.1%, a bonus saver 4.8%. Taxed at 30%, that 4.8% is about 3.4%. Still behind 4.0%. And tax is charged on interest that inflation has already eaten. Even at the Reserve Bank's 2–3% target, money earning nothing loses half its value in under 30 years (about 28 at 2.5%). That's why people hold assets like shares and property. In Australia's long-run record (about 1900–2015, after inflation, before tax), shares averaged about 7.8% a year, housing 6.4%, cash 1.3%. Those are averages over a century, not a promise: assets carry risk, can fall for years, and nothing is guaranteed. Right now housing prices have fallen in most capital cities (RBA, 29 Sep). Investing isn't just about growing your money. It's about not letting it quietly shrink. General information only, not financial advice. Sources: ABS Consumer Price Index (monthly, Aug 2026; quarterly, June qtr 2026; Melbourne all groups). RBA retail deposit rates, table F4 (Aug 2026).
