You may already be using dynamic assessment without calling it dynamic assessment. 👀 Any time you move beyond “Can they do it?” and start trying different cues, teaching a skill, changing the level of support, and watching how the client responds, you’re gathering dynamic assessment information. Why might that matter? Dynamic assessment can give you information that a score or single production can’t. It can help you explore stimulability, responsiveness to cueing, how much support is needed, what types of supports are most effective, and whether the client can maintain or generalize a skill as support is reduced. It can also be especially helpful when standardized assessments may not be appropriate or adequately normed for your client’s linguistic, cultural, or educational background. Rather than relying only on how a client performs compared to a normative sample, dynamic assessment gives you another way to examine how they learn and respond when provided with support. For our speech example, knowing that Noah cannot produce /r/ independently is helpful. But learning that he can produce it after specific teaching and then maintain it with fewer cues tells us even more. 🧠 Dynamic assessment can be useful when you’re trying to: ✨ better understand a client’s learning potential ✨ determine which cues or supports are most effective ✨ supplement standardized assessment information ✨ assess clients when available norms may not adequately represent their background ✨ help guide treatment planning and goal development ✨ document change and responsiveness over time You might already be doing it. Now you have a name for it. 😉 💾 Save this one for your next assessment or progress note time! #ThinkWeekInGradSchool #DynamicAssessment #SpeechLanguagePathology #SLP #slpgradstudent
