You Won’t Believe How Weird This Giant Fish Gets! 😱🐟 This is the ocean sunfish, also known as the Mola mola, and it’s one of the heaviest bony fish species on Earth! Adults can grow more than 10 feet long and weigh thousands of pounds, but they start life incredibly small. Mola mola spend much of their lives in the open ocean, diving hundreds of meters deep to hunt animals like jellyfish, small fish, squid and other soft-bodied prey. You might also see one lying sideways near the surface. Scientists believe sunfish may do this to warm themselves after deep, cold dives, and the surface can also give seabirds a chance to pick parasites off their skin. And these fish can carry A LOT of parasites. Dozens of parasite species have been documented living on and inside ocean sunfish. They’re also incredible egg producers. A single female has been found carrying an estimated 300 MILLION eggs, one of the highest numbers ever recorded in a vertebrate! And yes, Mola mola can be found off the Pacific Coast, including waters off Oregon. From a tiny larva to a massive open-ocean fish, the Mola mola is easily one of the strangest animals swimming in our ocean. #education #learning #animals #nature #ocean

You Have To See These 20 Million Year Old Sea Animals! 😱 The Oregon Coast is absolutely PACKED with fossils from ancient sea life! Around 20 million years ago, much of this area was underwater, and the sediment that built up on the ocean floor preserved animals that lived here. Today, erosion exposes those fossils right along the coastline! You can find fossilized clams, scallops, snails and other mollusks, sometimes still showing incredible details from their original shells. There are also fossils from crabs and ghost shrimp, including claws that survived millions of years buried inside the rock. You can even find fish bones and vertebrae, and occasionally fossils from much larger marine animals like whales and other marine mammals! Some Oregon Coast formations contain entire communities of ancient sea life, giving us a look at what was living in the Pacific Northwest millions of years ago. And the craziest part? New fossils are STILL being exposed as the coastline naturally erodes! What fossil would YOU want to find? #education #learning #animals #nature #Oregon

This Giant Fish Has No Tail And Can Weigh Over 4,000 Pounds! 😱🐟 Meet the Mola mola, also known as the ocean sunfish, one of the strangest fish swimming in our oceans! Unlike most fish, Mola mola don’t have a traditional tail! Instead, they have a structure called a clavus, which helps them steer while their massive dorsal and anal fins propel them through the water. And believe it or not, these enormous fish don’t have scales! Their bodies are covered in thick, rubbery skin that can be several inches thick. Their teeth are fused together, forming a small, beak-like mouth that they can’t completely close! Despite their enormous size, ocean sunfish are surprisingly powerful swimmers. Scientists have recorded them diving more than 800 meters below the surface! And here’s something even crazier! Baby Mola mola have tiny spines covering their bodies, giving them a completely different appearance from adults. They eventually lose these spines as they grow! Ocean sunfish can even launch themselves out of the water, sometimes jumping several feet above the surface, possibly to dislodge parasites! And if you’re lucky, you might spot one of these incredible animals swimming right off the Oregon coast! #education #learning #animals #nature #ocean

You Won’t Believe What Hatches Out Of This Giant Egg‼️😱 This is an egg case from a giant Pacific skate, one of the largest skate species in the world! These massive egg cases can grow over a foot long and are commonly called mermaid’s purses! Unlike most fish that release thousands of tiny eggs, giant Pacific skates lay enormous, leathery egg cases containing developing embryos. Each egg case has four horn-like projections that help anchor it to the ocean floor, preventing it from being swept away by currents! And here’s something incredible! These babies can spend well over a YEAR developing inside their egg cases before finally hatching! During this time, the developing skate receives nutrients from a large yolk sac, while oxygen-rich seawater enters through small openings in the case. When the baby finally emerges, it’s already a fully formed miniature skate, capable of swimming and hunting on its own! And these incredible animals live right here in the Pacific Ocean, including the deep waters off the Oregon coast! If you ever find one of these strange-looking cases washed up on the beach, you might be holding the home of a giant Pacific skate! #education #learning #animals #nature #ocean

Rescuing sea animals on the beach‼️😱 Be sure to hit that heart button for more ocean videos! PSA: I am experienced in jellyfish identification. Some jellyfish are not safe to touch. Do not touch jellyfish if you cannot properly identify. The big jellyfish pictured in this video is a harmless moon jellyfish. The smaller jellyfish is a stinging red Medusa jellyfish. Would you have been able to tell which one stings, just by looking? 🪼 #animals #nature

These Tiny Beach Animals Will Eat Almost Anything! 😱 Meet shoreline isopods, a.k.a. SAND PIRANHAS! These tiny crustaceans are some of the most important scavengers living along our coastlines! They feed on dead fish, decaying marine animals and other organic material that washes ashore, helping recycle nutrients back into the coastal ecosystem. Some species can gather in massive groups and strip flesh from dead animals using their powerful mouthparts! When the tide goes out, many of these little guys burrow beneath the sand. As the water returns, they emerge to search for their next meal. And they’re not just found here in Oregon! Different species of shoreline isopods inhabit beaches around the world, including North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand! Despite their aggressive feeding behavior, these tiny animals play an essential role in keeping our beaches clean and returning nutrients to the food web! Next time you’re exploring the beach, remember that there’s an entire ecosystem living right beneath your feet! #education #learning #animals #nature #Oregon

Imagine You Are Born A Sand Piranha! 😱 Imagine you are born a shoreline isopod, a.k.a. a SAND PIRANHA! This is what your life would look like… You begin your life inside your mother’s brood pouch, where you’re protected until you’re ready to emerge! Once you’re born, you’re already a miniature version of your parents! You have seven pairs of legs, a tough exoskeleton, and two antennae to help you navigate your surroundings. Your new home? The shoreline! 🌊 You spend your days hiding beneath rocks, seaweed, and other debris, where it’s cool and moist. You need moisture to survive because your specialized respiratory structures must stay wet! But you’re getting hungry! Luckily, you’re part of nature’s cleanup crew! You feed on decaying seaweed, animal remains, and other organic material that washes ashore. And you’re not alone! Shoreline isopods can be found along coastlines around the world, from tropical beaches to the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest! As you grow, your exoskeleton becomes too small, so you shed it in two separate stages! First your back half, then your front half! But life isn’t easy when you’re this small! Birds, fish, and other shoreline predators are constantly looking for their next meal. You spend much of your life hiding, scavenging, and avoiding becoming somebody else’s dinner! Eventually, you’ll reach adulthood, find a mate, and potentially produce your own offspring, starting the entire life cycle all over again! And while you might only be a few centimeters long, you’re playing an important role in your ecosystem by breaking down organic material and recycling nutrients! Congratulations! You’ve officially lived the life of a SAND PIRANHA! #education #learning #animals #nature #marinebiology
