You Won’t Believe How Weird This Giant Fish Gets! 😱🐟 This is the ocean sunfish, also known as the Mola mola, and it’s one of the heaviest bony fish species on Earth! Adults can grow more than 10 feet long and weigh thousands of pounds, but they start life incredibly small. Mola mola spend much of their lives in the open ocean, diving hundreds of meters deep to hunt animals like jellyfish, small fish, squid and other soft-bodied prey. You might also see one lying sideways near the surface. Scientists believe sunfish may do this to warm themselves after deep, cold dives, and the surface can also give seabirds a chance to pick parasites off their skin. And these fish can carry A LOT of parasites. Dozens of parasite species have been documented living on and inside ocean sunfish. They’re also incredible egg producers. A single female has been found carrying an estimated 300 MILLION eggs, one of the highest numbers ever recorded in a vertebrate! And yes, Mola mola can be found off the Pacific Coast, including waters off Oregon. These massive egg cases can grow over a foot long and are commonly called mermaid’s purses! Unlike most fish that release thousands of tiny eggs, giant Pacific skates lay enormous, leathery egg cases containing developing embryos. Each egg case has four horn-like projections that help anchor it to the ocean floor, preventing it from being swept away by currents! And here’s something incredible! These babies can spend well over a YEAR developing inside their egg cases before finally hatching! During this time, the developing skate receives nutrients from a large yolk sac, while oxygen-rich seawater enters through small openings in the case. When the baby finally emerges, it’s already a fully formed miniature skate, capable of swimming and hunting on its own!
