AGI is something that the media reports on and AI companies strive for, but does it matter to the layman? Consumers that use AI now really only care that the next model does the things they need it to, but better. Let's take a marketer, for example, if they're using it to draft up social media posts - do they care that the next model release is "closer to AGI." Or are they more concerned about how well their model of choice writes social media posts? AI gives people instant access to "free" skilled labour. Need a writer? Ask ChatGPT to start writing. Need someone to draw a thumbnail? Get Gemini to generate a picture in any style. And this is just scratching the surface. Our society is already suffering from an instant gratification epidemic, and somehow AI made this worse - the invention of mobile internet gave us the ability to instantly check in on someone, read the news, or alleviate boredom - and now we're seemingly doing something similar to skilled labour. We have instant skilled labour on demand 24/7 - so why spend the time to learn or create anything manually? It's easy for forget that AGI doesn't mean sentience. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) refers to a system capable of understanding, learning, and applying intelligence across virtually any intellectual task at or beyond the human level. While today’s AI is "narrow" - excelling at specific jobs like writing code, generating images, or playing chess - AGI is the leap toward a machine that can adapt on the fly, reason through unfamiliar problems, and teach itself new skills without task-specific training. Even with all that, it doesn't mean that the AI will suddenly gain sentience (as far as we know as of now). When we think of AGI as a consumer, we often think that it will bring about a near-human experience in the context of where we use AI. If we use it to help us code, we think that an AGI will be just like talking to a human developer - it may well seem that way, but it won't be sentient. #agi #ai #chatgpt #sentience #fyp
