What the heck are protocols? It’s a word we throw around a lot, usually to describe things that feel like magic. But really, a protocol is just a shared set of rules that devices and software follow so they can communicate and play nice, at least...most of the time. #networking #networkengineer #tech #stem #it

Your IT team can see way more than you think when you’re on that work laptop. VPN or Zero Trust, everything you do online routes through the company. YouTube, Gmail, whatever, it’s logged. We’re not watching you… unless there’s an incident. Then yeah, we see everything. Trust me, James knows what he did. #tech #it #cybersecurity #stem #workfromhome

Your Wi-Fi sucks, but it’s probably not your internet speed, it’s your old devices clogging up the airwaves. Here’s how to fix it: 1.    Separate legacy devices onto a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID 2.    Isolate them with VLANs if your gear supports it 3.    Rate-limit that VLAN, they don’t need full bandwidth 4.    Replace the worst offenders (your 2009 printer isn’t worth it) You don’t need more bandwidth, you need fewer Wi-Fi leeches. Full breakdown in the video. #networkengineer #wifi #networking #cybersecurity #tech #stem #it

There was a time when getting online meant making sure nobody needed the phone. Then your dial-up modem made a noise that sounded like a serious hardware problem, and that was how you knew things were going well. Who else would cover the modem with blankets so they could sneak online late at night as a kid? 🤣 #networking #stem #modem #tech #technology

At my last job, one of the largest universities in Florida, “the Wi-Fi sucks” was the ticket I dreaded seeing in my queue. It could mean bad RF, broken DHCP, DNS, or the uplink, and the ticket gave me none of that. That troubleshooting experience is one reason our team moved to HPE Mist Networking. I recreated several of those failures in my lab to see how Mist separated them. Check it out for yourself: bit.ly/4p2Hya4 #ad #tech #wifi #networking @HPE

While everyone at the Cincinnati Open was watching the battle on the court, I got to walk through the network rooms supporting the other one: the systems behind ticket scans, tap-to-pay, video walls, player services, and public Wi-Fi that help make the Cincinnati Open one of the best tennis experiences in the world. Across 40 acres, that network includes 17 miles of fiber, 100 Cisco Catalyst 9300-M switches, 320 Meraki access points, and a high-availability pair split between two network rooms. As a network guy, this was my kind of stadium tour!! Thank you, @Cisco and @CincyTennis, for the behind-the-scenes look. It was unforgettable! #CincinnatiOpen #Cisco #NetworkEngineering #WiFi

Yes, I do a lot of sponsored content. No, I’m not going to ever apologize for it because it allows me to give my time and knowledge away for free to those who need it. Thank you @alexcastro.ig for having me on his podcast and asking questions that got me fired up. 🤣 #technology #contentcreator #podcast

WiFi names are not unique. Anyone can copy any name they want and you’d have no idea. Always use HTTPS when connecting to public hotspots and be super vigilant about personal passwords in splash pages. #wifi #networking #tech #cybersecurity

LARPing as a network engineer except they gave me badge access and 20 Opengear boxes 💀 Out-of-band management is how we get back into the equipment when the main network is cooked. Installing it now because driving back to the data center later would be a deeply unserious side quest. #networking #datacenter #networkengineer #opengear #tech
