It can disrupt the regulation of blood pressure, digestion, temperature, sweating, and other automatic functions. That helps explain why symptoms in different parts of the body can be connected ❤️🩹 Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is one form of dysautonomia (not another name for every form). The impact can extend to school, work, and everyday activities, even when someone looks well. For Dysautonomia Awareness Month, let’s make dysautonomia easier to explain and its impact harder to overlook ❤️🩹 Share this with someone who may need it or save it for a future appointment. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis combined 19 studies involving 8,268 people with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). The combined estimate suggested that more than half had at least one digestive symptom. Nausea was the most common, followed by bloating, abdominal pain and fullness after meals. The review also examined conditions reported alongside POTS, including irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, chronic fatigue, mast cell activation syndrome and joint hypermobility syndrome. Results varied widely between studies, and many accompanying diagnoses were patient-reported. These findings describe associations, not proof that POTS caused the digestive symptoms or other conditions. October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month. Understanding the symptoms reported beyond heart rate is part of that awareness ❤️🩹 Source: Kulin D, Shah A, Fairlie T, et al. Neurogastroenterology & Motility. 2026;38(4):e70305. The counts tell only part of the story. A Danish study compared 71,317 children and teens diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism with 713,170 matched peers without either diagnosis. Between 2012 and 2022, the groups became more similar in certain birth and family characteristics. The differences narrowed but did not disappear. The shift was greater for ADHD and among those diagnosed at older ages. The authors suggest changes in awareness, identification, and access to assessment may help explain rising diagnoses, rather than changes in underlying risk alone. An important distinction: becoming more similar in background characteristics does not establish that daily difficulties or support needs have decreased. The authors note the findings do not show that ADHD or autism have become less severe. The study does not settle whether overdiagnosis is occurring. Its findings concern children and teens in Denmark and cannot automatically be applied to adults or other countries. Understanding rising diagnoses means looking at who is being identified, how identification may be changing, and what the evidence supports. Source: Tarp et al., JAMA Psychiatry.
