When people pay taxes, it should be used to finance the priorities of the people and not merely the comfort and machinery of the State. Before buying another expensive government vehicle for millions each, ask the mother sitting in a hospital whether she would rather have another SUV in Banjul or medicine in her hospital. Its a mockery and an insult to Gambians when government officials live and flaunt their extravagant lives at the Expense of poor and working class Gambians who can’t even afford a daily meal. When surveillance expands, it is rarely experienced equally. More monitoring, searches, biometric identification and algorithmic profiling may be justified in the language of “national security” and “fighting crime”. But without strong safeguards, these powers risk reproducing racial profiling and placing racialised communities, Black people, Muslims, people of Middle Eastern, Asian and Latin American backgrounds, under disproportionate suspicion. Sweden’s use of powerful data-analysis technology such as Palantir raises serious questions about privacy, transparency, algorithmic bias, accountability and due process. These concerns have also been raised in the Swedish Parliament, including whether opaque analytical systems can be properly scrutinised and whether individuals can challenge decisions influenced by them. A democracy must never allow the pursuit of security to create a society where some communities are treated as suspects before they have committed any crime. Security without rights is not security. Safety cannot be built on surveillance, suspicion and discrimination.
