We’re often asked why we choose to expose the legs of suit performers when designing our dinosaur suits. It’s a great question and the answer is simple: we never compromise on the performance of our creatures. You might think having the performer’s legs completely hidden inside the creature’s legs will look more believable, but it’s not the case. Once we hide the performer’s legs inside the suit legs, the form of the creature’s legs must conform to that of the human inside the suit. This creates an unintentionally comical, waddling walk for the creature. That’s fine for a comical creature or caricature (think ‘Big Bird’ from Sesame Street. No offence Big Bird!). But a Creature Technology Company creature must be as lifelike and believable as possible, and by keeping the performer’s legs and creature’s legs separate, until a connection at the ankles, we are able to maintain a character-accurate pose and performance. Discuss! #fromthearchives #dinosaur #creaturedesign #utahraptor #jurassicworld #jurassicpark

This is Stegosaurus from Walking with Dinosaurs, undergoing walking tests in the workshop before going out on the road. The maintenance hatch in the head is open to allow access to minor mechs - eye blinks, jaw, nostril flare etc. There’s always a lot to fit inside a creature head, and Steg presents some particular challenges, as you can imagine! #peabrain

While we’re best known for the massive animatronics you might see in a theme park, our roots are firmly in the world of puppetry. Creating the illusion of life, where it doesn’t actually exist, is as old as shadow puppets on a cave wall. And it’s this tradition that Creature Technology Co. seeks to continue with our work.

To this day ‘Monstrous Nightmare’ from the How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular that toured the world in 2012-2013, is one of our largest and most impressive creations. At over 15 meters long and weighing more than 3 tonnes, the logistics of touring with a fire-breathing beast like this were complex to say the least!

Final testing of Nadder, from the How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular back in 2012. Notice how we're getting lots of nice, elastic 'bounce' through the neck, wings and tail. For us that's great, organic movement at very low cost. #httyd #dragon #creaturedesign

Flashback Friday! Take a look at these adorable baby Plateosaurs scampering around the workshop ahead of their Walking With Dinosaurs debut in 2007. Although better known for our large-scale animatronics, we love working with the little guys too!
