“I was one of the first people to come out and say that was the wrong move to sign that executive order,” Iowa GOP gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn said Sunday of President Trump’s move to boost production of the herbicide glyphosate, a chemical opposed by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for causing cancer. “I think that if we could give the president the advice on that, that he would understand that better,” he said.
“He’s doing very little right,” Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said Sunday, criticizing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for being “a yes-man for the president.” “He talks about how he wants to eliminate or reduce the rules of engagement, and you see the consequences of that in Iran,” he added. “His plan is what we went into Iran with, and he has bombed or attacked over 15,000 targets, depleting our munition supply. This thing has been a disaster because the Secretary of Defense has no idea what he's doing.”
Energy Secretary Chris Wright maintained confidence on Sunday that gas prices will drop in the next four weeks, but says “there’s no guarantees” there won’t be an October surprise that sends oil and gas prices up ahead of November’s midterms. “There’s no guarantees in conflict. There’s no guarantees in life. But everything we’re doing is to grow the supply of diesel, to grow the supply of gasoline,” Wright said. #gas #economy #trump #news
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday that President Trump was "well aware of the risks to energy flows" before launching the war in Iran earlier this year, but argued "the world cannot sustain a nuclear-armed Iran." "He knew it was going to elevate energy prices in the short run, he said, 'I'm going to take a hit there, but I got to do the right thing,'" Wright said. Americans have been feeling the financial squeeze of soaring gas and diesel prices in recent months. But the Trump administration has pointed to the potential threat a nuclear-armed Iran could pose, and how it could represent a long-term threat to energy prices. Wright defended the president on Sunday, arguing that Mr. Trump has taken a "strong stand that Iran, the world's greatest terrorist regime, cannot and will not have nuclear weapons." #trump #iran #energy #economy #prices
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito says political attacks aimed at the high court — most recently by President Trump on his social media platform — “can be quite damaging,” citing “great change in what presidents have said about the court when they are unhappy about our decisions.” “Traditionally, what presidents would say is: ‘The Supreme Court has made its decision, I disagree with it, but we have to abide by it.’ And that was it. That's what presidents said. That's what members of the cabinet said. That has changed,” he says.
Hispanic voters have moved more towards the Democrats compared with 2024, the latest CBS News Battleground Tracker Poll finds. If Republicans can’t keep the gains they made with Hispanic voters in 2024, CBS News Executive Director of Elections & Surveys Anthony Salvanto says, they “will not necessarily get the gains out of redistricting that they had hoped for.”
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said President Trump is “trying to buy votes” with his proposed $5,000 dividend if Republicans retain control of Congress after the midterm elections and his recent announcement to send payments to Medicare Part B enrollees and ACA recipients. Kelly told @margaret_brennan on Sunday he supports “trying to help some working class people and seniors on a fixed income,” but added that the $5,000 midterm dividend is “not right.” “I think people should see this for what it is, especially this $5,000 payment, if Republicans maintain control of the House and the Senate. I mean, this is just a payoff, and he’s trying to buy votes,” Kelly said.
A new CBS News Battleground Tracker Poll finds that if the midterm elections were held today, Democrats would hold a 229-206 advantage over Republicans in the U.S. House, giving Democrats the majority. #midterm #politics #election #democrats #republicans

President Trump pressured Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Saturday to support a bill to make daylight saving time permanent, urging Americans to call what appeared to be the personal cellphone number of Cotton, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Cotton, a member of Republican leadership, reiterated his opposition to permanent daylight saving time in a social media post of his own Saturday. The Sunshine Protection Act passed the House in July in a 308 to 117 vote. Mr. Trump called the passage of the bill "Great News for America!" at the time. The bill still faces roadblocks in the Senate, where some Republicans are strongly opposed. #trump #arkansas #gop #republican
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a meeting with President Trump would be difficult until trust between the U.S. and Iran is restored, pointing to continued U.S. sanctions, threats and strikes. “Every day, they increase the sanctions against us. Every day, they threaten us. Every day, they strike us. And they don’t honor what they have put in writing,” Pezeshkian said in an interview on Friday. “They don’t honor what they’ve signed. How can we believe that if we talk the problem would get resolved?” #iran #unitedstates #trump #middleeast
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was asked by @margaret_brennan whether Iran would release two wrongfully detained Americans as a gesture of goodwill to the United States. One of them, journalist Reza Valizadeh, is being held in Tehran’s Evin prison. “Do you think by setting them free, we can rebuild trust?” Pezeshkian asked, arguing that Iran had previously released prisoners as part of an agreement with the U.S. that he said Washington did not fulfill. “We tested it, but it didn’t work,” he said. “The United States gets what it wants and then doesn’t honor its commitment.” #iran #trump #unitedstates #news
