Should you be listed as a priority customer? If you have a disabled child, you can sign up for the Priority Services Register (PSR), a free, UK-wide service provided by your energy, gas, water suppliers, and local network operators. Who is Eligible? You qualify for the register if someone in your household: ➡️ Is disabled or has a long-term medical condition (including developmental conditions or cognitive impairments). ➡️ Relies on medical equipment that requires a power supply (such as a ventilator, dialysis machine, feeding pump, or oxygen concentrator). ➡️ Is a parent or carer with children under the age of 5 (and some providers extend support for older children with additional needs). What Support You Can Get By registering your household, you can access specialized assistance, including: ➡️ Advance notice of planned power, gas, or water supply interruptions. ➡️ Priority support during unexpected utility emergencies, which may include bottled water deliveries, alternative cooking facilities, hot meals, or mobile charging points if your child relies on life-sustaining medical gear. ➡️ Protection from disconnection: Energy suppliers signed up to industry commitments cannot knowingly disconnect a vulnerable household, and rules restrict disconnections during the winter months (October 1 to March 31). ➡️ Tailored communications: Free bills and correspondence in alternative formats (such as large print, Braille, or audio), or password schemes to verify identity if a utility worker visits your home. ➡️ Practical help: Arranging free annual gas safety checks or assistance with reading your meter. How to Apply ➡️ Contact your energy supplier (gas and electricity) directly and ask to be added to their Priority Services Register. ➡️ Contact your local water company (such as Thames Water, Affinity Water, or Anglian Water) to register with them as well. ➡️ Contact your local electricity network operator (the company that manages the physical power lines) to ensure you are on their emergency priority list. You can find your network operator via Energy Networks Association #disability #prioritycustomer #utilitysupplier #senparentsoftiktok #disabilitysupport

Here is a breakdown of the eligibility criteria... Severely Mentally Impaired (SMI) This criteria consists of 6 points, and is a cumulative test, which means you have to be able to satisfy every point with evidence in order to qualify. If you fail on just 1 point, the whole test is failed. 1. Already in receipt of High Rate Care 2. Arrested or incomplete development of the brain 3. Severe Impairment of intelligence 4. Severe Impairment of social functioning 5. Severe behavioural problems 6. Requires physical restraint Virtually Unable to Walk (VUW) Some children, who don't qualify for the higher rate mobility component on the grounds of 'severe mental impairment', may qualify on the basis that they are 'virtually unable to walk'. The 'virtually unable to walk' test looks at the child's ability to walk outside and takes into account their speed, manner of walking, distance covered and the time it takes. It also looks at any 'interruptions' in their ability to make progress on foot. These 'interruptions' must be part of a physical disability or have a physical cause, rather than being a conscious choice. DLA case law states that it accepts that Autism is a physical disorder of brain development, and that some children with learning disabilities may have 'interrupted' walking because of a physical cause. This also includes brain damage, chromosome and genetic disorders, such as Down's Syndrome. If your child can physically put one foot in front of the other but often stops walking and is unable to continue, you need to be able to show that: • This type of behaviour is the result of a known physical cause, and • The interruptions in walking are frequent enough that your child's walking is so limited that they can be considered to be 'virtually unable to walk'. If you'd like to know more about these criteria, or would like our support to challenge a DLA decision, we have a range of services to help you.
