Owensboro, Kentucky, hosted the last public execution in the United States on August 14, 1936. Rainey Bethea, a 26-year-old Black man, was hanged for the rape and murder of 70-year-old widow Lischia Edwards. The Crime On June 7, 1936, neighbors found Edwards dead in her East Fifth Street apartment after she missed her usual morning routine. She had been raped, strangled, and beaten, with bruises on her face and signs of vaginal trauma confirmed by doctors. Bethea, a habitual burglar recently paroled from Eddyville Prison, confessed multiple times, led police to stolen jewelry, and left fingerprints and his prison ring at the scene. Though he later recanted, evidence including witness sightings and his guilty plea convinced researchers of his guilt. Arrest and Trial Police identified Bethea quickly due to his prior arrests and local recognition. He confessed five times under questioning but claimed coercion amid racial tensions. His trial lasted just one day in July 1936; he pleaded guilty to rape, and the jury sentenced him to death by hanging. Controversy persists over possible racial bias, as some Black community leaders alleged a rushed process, but physical evidence strongly implicated him. Preparation and Crowd Sheriff Florence Thompson, Kentucky’s first female sheriff who assumed office after her husband’s death, oversaw the event. To protect courthouse flowers, she chose a riverfront lot for the gallows, drawing an estimated 20,000 spectators—many camping overnight—from across the region. Black residents largely stayed away or hid, amid a tense, carnival-like atmosphere with vendors and journalists nationwide. One man died in a rush-hour car crash en route. Execution Chaos At 5:21 a.m., deputies escorted Bethea, accompanied by priest Father Lammers, to the 15-foot gallows. Bethea changed into new socks, climbed calmly, and prayed as professional hangman Phil Hanna fitted the noose. Volunteer Arthur L. Hash, drunk in a white suit and Panama hat, botched the signal; Hanna yelled to proceed, but a deputy triggered the trapdoor. Bethea dropped eight feet, his neck snapping cleanly, yet his heart beat for 16 minutes. Hash fled, admitting intoxication; Hanna called it the worst of his 70 hangings. Aftermath Bethea’s body went into a reed basket, driven slowly through the crowd to an undertaker, then buried unmarked in Owensboro’s Potter’s Field against his wishes for burial in South Carolina. Public outrage over the spectacle ended such events; all U.S. executions turned private afterward. The case haunts Owensboro, fueling debates on race, justice, and spectacle. #OwensboroHistory #KentuckyWeirdFacts #LastPublicHanging #TrueCrimeTrivia #ViralHistoryFacts Shout out to GenX & G7
