Everything in this post comes from Safe Resin Art by Natalie Pikul, a nonfiction book about working safely with epoxy resin. Liquid epoxy resin and hardener are mainly a risk for your skin. Many components can sensitize your skin, and some hardeners are corrosive. Safe Resin Art counts epoxy resin among the cumulative allergens: Sometimes a single unprotected contact is enough to trigger an allergy. While it cures, epoxy resin reacts chemically. It doesn't dry; it cures through a reaction, and that reaction produces heat and fumes. Fume release is highest in the gel stage. So a respirator, gloves, and good ventilation belong in the gel and tacky stages too, not just the pour. No smell anymore? That doesn't mean it's safe. The smell is often gone after one or two hours, but the substances stay active much longer. Correctly mixed and fully cured, epoxy resin is considered chemically stable. But at room temperature, many epoxy resins reach full strength only after about a week, and some take several weeks. Keep a freshly poured piece out of living rooms and bedrooms for at least a week. And the skull and crossbones? Under the EU CLP Regulation, it stands only for acute toxicity, categories 1 to 3. Most commercially available epoxy resin systems don't carry a skull and crossbones; what counts is your product's label. You'll often find the exclamation mark there, and on many hardeners the corrosion symbol. Food safe? Not across the board. The claim covers only the conditions tested, and the piece must be fully cured. Children and pets stay out of the workspace, during curing too. Aber Moment mal… manchmal entstehen aus Fehlern die spannendsten Texturen. 🖤 Diese Schale ist der Beweis! Die Gelierspuren? Einzigartig. Die Struktur?
