Bites N’ Bullets is officially BACK!!! Bites N’ Bullets is a monthly, two-day club meet combining working dog training with practical firearms education and self-defense. The working dog portion will be led by Brandon of ParagonK9 (@paragonk9services ), an experienced and multi-certified working dog handler, trainer, and decoy. Dogs and handlers of all experience levels are welcome, and each team will be worked according to the dog’s current ability, temperament, confidence, and individual goals. Training will take place both indoors and outdoors and may include personal protection, sport work and foundations, grip development, targeting, confidence building, obedience and control under drive, handler mechanics, and troubleshooting. We will also include a short classroom portion covering the why and how behind the work, helping handlers better understand what their dog is showing them, why certain techniques are used, and how to apply them appropriately. After the dog work, we’ll transition into the firearms portion of Bites N’ Bullets. We’ll be working with attendees—especially women who want a supportive environment to learn—on safe, calm, and efficient firearm handling with a focus on confidence and practical self-defense. Whether you are completely new to shooting or simply want more practice, participation is optional and all experience levels are welcome. People love saying, “You need to be the leader. You need to be dominant. You need to be the alpha.” And yes, you should provide leadership. But leadership and domination are not the same thing. Using intimidation, physical force, or constant confrontation may suppress behavior in the moment, but it can also create conflict, damage communication, and teach a dog that you are another threat they need to manage. Proper leadership looks like clear communication, fair boundaries, predictable follow-through, thoughtful resource management, and stepping in before your dog feels responsible for handling conflict alone. This video is a perfect example. My dog didn’t look to me because she was afraid of challenging the “alpha.” She looked to me because experience has taught her that I listen, understand, and handle situations safely. A dog submitting because they fear you is not the same as a dog voluntarily trusting your judgment. Both may look like control, but only one is leadership. 😌
