Ancient Egypt was so old that even the ancient Egyptians themselves were already looking back into their own distant past. The civilization of Ancient Egypt lasted for more than 3,000 years, from the early dynastic period around 3100 BCE to the Roman conquest in 30 BCE. That is an enormous span of time. To put it into perspective, the people living in the later periods of Ancient Egypt were separated from the builders of the earliest pyramids by more than 1,000 years. And the fascinating part is that ancient Egyptians did not simply forget this earlier history. Scribes copied older texts, priests preserved religious traditions, rulers referred to earlier kings, and monuments were sometimes restored centuries after they had been built. Ancient Egyptians also created king lists that recorded rulers from previous dynasties, showing that they had a concept of their own historical past. In other words, Ancient Egypt was not just an ancient civilization to us. It was already an ancient civilization to some of the people who lived in Ancient Egypt itself. #history #historytok #fy #fypage #egypt

One of the strangest medical practices in history was trepanation, a procedure in which a hole was deliberately made in the skull. Trepanation is actually much older than the Middle Ages. Archaeologists have discovered trepanned skulls dating back thousands of years, showing that humans were performing this procedure long before medieval medicine. During the Middle Ages, some physicians believed that certain illnesses, including severe headaches, seizures, and mental disorders, could be caused by evil spirits or other harmful forces inside the body. In some cases, creating an opening in the skull was thought to allow these forces to escape. However, it is important not to imagine that every medieval headache was treated by drilling into someone's skull. Trepanation had several different uses, particularly for serious head injuries and skull fractures. It could also be extremely dangerous because of bleeding, infection, and damage to the brain. And surprisingly, archaeological evidence shows that some patients survived the procedure. Researchers can identify this because new bone growth around the opening indicates that the person lived long enough for the skull to begin healing. #fypage #fy #history #medicine #doctor

On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior during a powerful storm, taking all 29 crew members with her. The 729-foot (222-meter) freighter had been carrying taconite pellets from Superior, Wisconsin, to Detroit when it encountered extremely severe weather. Shortly before the sinking, Captain Ernest McSorley reported that the ship was taking on water and had developed a list. At around 7:10 p.m., the Fitzgerald communicated with the nearby SS Arthur M. Anderson. Minutes later, it disappeared from radar. No distress call was received. Investigators concluded that flooding had severely reduced the ship's freeboard and stability. However, because there were no survivors, the exact sequence of the final moments remains uncertain. The ship disappeared so rapidly that its final sinking is often described as taking only about 10 seconds. The wreck was discovered in 1976, lying in two major sections about 530 feet (162 meters) below the surface of Lake Superior. #history #fy #fypage #ship #Ocean
