DAY 11. A pretty lovely day at sea all in all today. The wind isn't super strong but we truck along consistently at 6.5/7knts. By 4pm the wind has backed from 120 true to 050 true so after 10 days we change to a port tack! It's nice to have a change, allow the flex in a different direction and stretch out our right legs a little bit! We see a motorboat on the horizon and manage to chat with them on the radio, they have diverted to avoid weather in the west but were heading straight for Horta now. Everyone gathers in the cockpit for dolphins at sunset and we all have a culinary first from Guy of a instant noodle frittata, delicious! . . DAY 12. It's all hands on deck (we prefer to call it a cockpit party) at midnight as a big squall line approaches. We've realised that as we've been sailing fairly heeled over that our radar isn't very responsive on the windward side until the squalls are pretty much on top of us. So in the dark of the night we are hyper aware. The squall starts to look quite mean as it gets closer and we get the tell tale big wind shifts so we decide to tack to avoid it and come back to course once it's passed. In the morning we tack again and start heading north to pick some wind that will be filling in from the north east This is definitely the most technical part of our navigation so far as we exit the trades and anticipate the variable winds ahead of us to avoid the patches of extreme weather. The route to the Azores from here is not a straight one and we are constantly re-downloading weather and checking the navigation to make sure we are getting there as fast as we can whilst minimising fuel consumption. . . . . . DAY 13. From midnight the wind dies and backs and we go from 10knts true at 090 to 3.7knts at 056 so by 10am we furl the headsails and put the engine on. We need to be heading north east and our quickest way to do that is motor-sailing right now. Although the light winds are never good news on a salling boat it does mean we have a lovely calm sea state and seeing wildlife becomes a lot easier. This pod of dolphins danced along with us for quite some time. There is a boat on the horizon that we slowly catch up with and it turns out to be the exact same catermeran that we saw a few days ago. They come within shouting distance of us (which always feels very bizarre in the middle of the Atlantic) and we make a bet. Whoever gets to Horta last buys the drinks at St Peter's although they are planning on just motoring the rumb line and we will be sailing the majority of the way. In the evening we have another problem with the generator so we turn the engine off to get better access and fix it whilst sailing to our best ability in the light winds. We motor through a very dark night but the benefit is we have a trail of phosphorescent in our wake - always one of the most magical things to see sailing offshore.
