Every Friday (no exceptions), I teach business classes to the women participating in Sewing Hope and working at Newbornlander. Why? Because the immigrant journey is a journey of reinvention. It is about creativity, resilience, and often starting from scratch. When I moved to Newfoundland and Labrador, I was a lawyer. Suddenly, I found myself unable to practice my profession in Canada. I could have accepted that reality, but instead, I saw an opportunity to build something new. A domestic sewing machine (I had never sewn before), $360 saved from tips earned working at Starbucks, and a very rustic English 😂. That was all I had. But I also had conviction, persistence, and a refusal to come to Canada only to survive when I knew I could contribute. Today, that experience shapes what I teach. Not just theory. Not just entrepreneurship. I teach the “know-how” of starting over. How to identify opportunities, solve problems, build confidence, and create something from nothing. That is why Newbornlander exists. Yes, we make Canadian-made baby accessories. But our bigger purpose is creating pathways for refugee and forcibly displaced women to enter the labour market, gain skills, and dream bigger for themselves and their families. 🇨🇦When you support businesses that create real social impact, you are supporting the Canada we all want to build: one that values opportunity, inclusion, and the potential of every person. That is what supporting Canada means to me. 🇨🇦
