No one tells new runners what these words actually mean. They just expect you to know. SHARE with a beginner runner Easy effort Running at a conversational, sustainable effort without a focus on pace or speed. Don’t worry about the numbers when you are starting out. Beginners adapt aerobically before they adapt mechanically. Easy effort allows the heart, capillaries, and mitochondria to develop without overwhelming muscles and joints. Zone 2 Zone 2 is typically ~60–70% of max heart rate, where your cardiovascular system can supply enough oxygen to meet demand without accumulating much fatigue. Beginners runners do not YET have the aerobic base or weekly volume needed for Zone 2 to be meaningful, so focusing on easy effort matters more than trying to “hit” a specific heart-rate zone. HR zones are an ESTIMATION, not the truth. Beginners experience rapid cardiovascular adaptation, so their HR zones shift frequently. Don’t feel frustrated by numbers that don’t always represent what you’re doing. Consistency Repeating manageable training week after week. Consistency is not perfect execution. Fitness comes from repeated exposure to stress, not heroic workouts. The body responds to frequency, not intensity spikes. Missing one run doesn’t matter. Quitting for three weeks does. 80/20 running About 80% of your running is easy effort, and 20% is moderate to hard. Beginners should run easy miles only until they build a comfort level with easy runs. When easy runs start to feel more natural and manageable, then add in one short “workout” day with a higher level of intensity and plenty of rest. Aerobic base An aerobic base is your body’s ability to use oxygen efficiently to produce energy so running feels sustainable instead of exhausting. Beginners don’t have much of it yet because their heart, muscles, and connective tissues haven’t had enough repeated, low-stress exposure to running. You build it by running mostly easy, often enough for your body to adapt. The goal early on isn’t speed; it’s teaching your body that running is something it can handle consistently.
