Now here’s one people don’t always expect when they hear “Appalachian food.” Pepperoni rolls. They’re about as West Virginian as food gets. And they came from Italian immigrants working in the coal industry. In 1927, Fairmont, West Virginia baker Giuseppe “Joseph” Argiro, a former coal miner, is credited with creating the pepperoni roll. The idea came from something miners were already doing: carrying bread and pepperoni to work. Argiro combined the two into a portable baked food. It was soft. It didn’t require utensils. It could be carried underground. And it was filling. Other West Virginians developed their own versions, including Filippo Colasessano and his son, who later experimented with additions such as cheese and peppers. And there’s an important lesson here. Appalachian cuisine wasn’t created by one ethnicity. It developed through Native American, European, African American, Italian, Eastern European, German, Scots-Irish and many other communities. The pepperoni roll is proof. A food can arrive with immigrants… meet an Appalachian industry… and become something uniquely Appalachian. #appalachia #appalachian #appalachianhistory
