MAKE IT BETTER 🌱🐝 At Detroit Hives, we believe every space has the potential to become something beautiful. With community support, we’re transforming blighted, vacant lots into thriving green spaces that bring beauty, biodiversity, and connection back to our neighborhoods. Because when we make it better for people, we make it better for pollinators, too. 🐝🌻 Better spaces. Healthier communities. A brighter future—for people and pollinators. We’ve brought the Jim Kennedy Conservation Award to Detroit! 🏆🐝 We’re incredibly thankful to share that we earned FIRST PLACE in the nonprofit category of the 2026 Cox Conserves Heroes program, receiving the Jim Kennedy Conservation Award! As the first organization in the State of Michigan to receive this honor in the program’s 18-year history, we’re bringing home a milestone rooted in environmental conservation, stewardship and leadership. To our family, friends, partners, fellow beekeepers, environmental enthusiasts, and every supporter who voted, volunteered, shared our story, or believed in our vision: this award is for you. Your love helped carry Detroit to a national stage. Our heartfelt thanks to Cox Enterprises and the James M. Cox Foundation for this extraordinary recognition and the $30,000 grant to advance our work! Presented at the October 14 ceremony, the award honors Jim Kennedy, Cox Enterprises’ Chairman Emeritus and chairman of the James M. Cox Foundation, for his environmental leadership. This investment will support our East Warren Community Arboretum and Botanical Garden, and the adjacent Rain Garden Boulderscape Project—helping transform vacant land into flourishing pollinator habitat, capture stormwater, and create welcoming spaces where neighbors can connect with nature and one another. From vacant lots to living possibilities.
