Update from northern #NorthCarolina after #HurricaneHelene ravaged the area in late September 2024. This watershed was heavily damaged, yet is recovering beautifully. Many residents in the region were without power and running water for 8 weeks!

I have been growing this strain of heirloom Native American tobacco for over 20 years. It’s a true Nicotiana rustica: a relatively smaller plant than the Caribbean tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) that the Europeans brought into the North American colonies. The Caribbean tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) eventually drove out interest in farming Nicotiana rustica because of its superior size and output of leaves. And that same Caribbean (and South American) tobacco eventually became the tobacco species of choice for most of humankind. There are 81 species of Nicotianas (tobaccos) and I have grown about 10 types and harvested a few more types from the wild. However, it is this Nicotiana rustica that is my favorite of all.
