If you often feel relieved when sick, there’s a reason for that 👇 Here’s what’s actually happening:
When you're sick, there's a socially acceptable, external reason to stop.

Your brain finally gets permission to rest without the guilt.

For ADHD brains that are constantly fighting the gap between what they should be doing and what they're actually doing - being sick temporarily silences that war. It's not that you enjoy being sick. It's that you enjoy the psychological relief that comes with it.
The underlying issue it points to: * ADHD brains often struggle to give themselves permission to rest without an external excuse * There's frequently a background hum of guilt, pressure, and self-criticism that rarely turns off * Sickness is one of the few things that "overrides" that system What this actually tells you: If being sick feels like a relief, it's a signal that your baseline state has too much pressure in it. That's worth paying attention to - not as a personal failure, but as useful data about how you're structuring your life.

Here are a few things you can do, to not need being sick in order to finally rest:

1. Scheduled rest that feels "legitimate"
Building rest into your calendar like an appointment. Your brain needs it to be official to accept it - an external structure that replaces the external excuse of being sick.

2. Active rest vs passive rest
ADHD brains often can't do passive rest (just lying there, doing nothing). But they can do active rest - something low-stimulation that still engages the mind slightly. Think walking, light gaming, a podcast, drawing. It's rest enough without the torture of silence.

3. Body doubling for rest
Sounds weird but watching someone else do something calm (lo-fi study streams, slow TV) can help your brain settle without needing to perform.

You don't need to get sick to earn your rest.
