The first episode of a show has one job: to convince you there’s a whole world worth returning to. Think about it. In 45 minutes (or less), it has to establish a tone, hook you with characters you don’t know yet, and promise something bigger on the horizon. Some pilots do this so well you can feel the potential crackling through the screen. I’ve always been fascinated by what makes a great first episode work. Sometimes it’s that perfect balance of mystery and character like in Lost. Sometimes it’s the sharp confidence (Succession comes to mind), or the emotional gut punch that tells you exactly what kind of ride you’re about to take. Every memorable pilot seems to leave you with one clear thought: I have to see what happens next. So now I’m curious! What’s the best first episode of TV you’ve ever seen, and what made it stick with you? Was it the writing? The world-building? The performances? Drop your pick in the comments. I’m building my rewatch list.
