While tattoos have been stigmatized in China, the last 20 years have seen a shift as a new generation recognizes the medium as art and a form of individual expression. Tattooing was once a sacred practice and cultural emblem for China’s indigenous tribes. Radical artists and poets embraced it as part of an urban counterculture over a thousand years ago during the Tang Dynasty’s golden age (600s-900s). Underground tattooers adorned the bodies of these creatives and nonconformists who challenged the social order with poetic verses, nature symbols, and deity figures. The Tang Dynasty also saw the maturation of Chinese landscape painting, known as Shanshui, which focused on mountains, water, and the natural world. Historically, these two traditions remained separate. This painting style appeared on surfaces such as silk scrolls, paper, folding screens, murals, and ceramics. After centuries of complex dynastic histories, a clear 1,400-year gap exists before modern tattooers adapted the original landscapes onto the skin. Spanning that 1,400-year arc brings us to Chen Jie, a Beijing tattoo artist who owns NewTattoo Studio and has spent more than two decades in the craft. She is known for merging traditional Chinese brushwork motifs with contemporary tattooing. In this Scene360 interview, we explore her career origins, artistic influences, and the unique touch she brings to each tattoo. 🔗 INTERVIEW, LINK IN BIO #chinesetattoo #inkwash #tattoos #tattoo #tattooed

while sharing a bit of yourself is part of using social media today, tattooer Myungdo (Hyung Do Lim) uses it only for professional purposes and keeps his personal life separate. The 29-year-old began his career in 2020, working in Singapore for a year before moving to Melbourne. Myungdo’s work is immersed in deep, saturated colors: magentas, reds, oranges, greens, and blues. The focus is on florals. Sometimes these vivid flowers appear in dark rectangular frames. Other times, they drift freely across the body. Clients often ask for classics like roses, peonies, and orchids. His personal favorite remains the hellebore, a low-maintenance evergreen perennial. For these detailed compositions, Myungdo uses 3 and 5 round liners (0803 bugpin and 1005 double-zero). He quietly observes the aging process, relying on repeat clients to track how his work progresses. Despite the durability of his color inks, the grey wash shading in older pieces faded faster than expected. As a result, he altered his black ink mixing and layering to improve results. Outside the studio, he rides motorcycles. When traveling, he often visits botanical gardens to photograph plant references. 🔗 FULL interview, link in the bio #flowertattoo #tattoos #tattoo #floraltattoo #colortattoo

A new reality was observed at the Golden State Tattoo Expo (September 18–20, 2026). Because of the economic climate, the Pasadena Convention Center adjusted the event layout to fit entirely within its exhibit hall rather than expanding into additional spaces. Attendance was lighter than usual. Walking the floor on Saturday, the real story behind a challenging year was the inevitable generational transition inside the booths. Generational shifts have been a standard part of the business cycle since the industry professionalized in the late 1800s. This evolution centered on Lyle Tuttle and Dave Yurkew organizing the first official convention in 1976. The core dynamic remains the same. Time moves on, and a new wave of tattooers has already emerged. Sullen Art Collective served as the main event sponsor, with their own Big Hoon entertaining on and off stage as the official MC. Renowned tattoo hosts Carlos Torres and Nikko Hurtado also joined as usual. The venue featured realism pioneer Boris and Asian tattooing expert Jess Yen, each bringing 34 years of experience. Kashu Horishin (20 years) displayed his skills using traditional Tebori technique and machine. Next came people with more than two decades of experience: Aries Rhysing and Po Zhang. Then the group with 14 to 16 years of experience: Q (NonfromSeoul), Oliver Kenton, Nathan Mould, Mitch Koch, and Deanna James. Another group included individuals with 9 to 12 years of experience: John Hudic (The Raven and The Wolves), who won 1st Place for “Best Cover-Up”; Freddie Albrighton; Johan “Artss” Castillo; and Mammon and Timor (Ganga LA). The lineup included several artists from Scene360’s past editorials: Denis Torikashvili (29 years of experience), who won First Place for “Best Chest or Back Piece” over the weekend; Ilya Cascad (13 years); BK; Swani; ShiRyu; Dino; Basil; and Solar. Among the large-scale projects on display, several stood out. Michelle Lynn Miller worked on a bodysuit in progress at the Ornamentalika booth. Hocheon added touches to a modernized Japanese dragon back piece and another showing Raijin and Fujin, the thunder and wind gods. Yesy Tattoo presented a healed replication of Rubens’ painting “The Descent from the Cross” (1612–1614) on her client’s back. She also worked with the same client over the weekend on a new leg piece. Freely adapting influences like Ubaldo Gandolfi’s “Selene and Endymion” (1770), Yesy revealed different sections of the piece daily. Her portrait of an old man won “Best of Saturday.” Her rendering of a bird hanging from a book won “Best of Sunday” and secured “2nd Place Most Original.” The highly anticipated “Best of Show” award went to Pierre “Lotusonyx” Bustos, Levgen Knysh, and Nihat Uzuntepe from the Hustle Butter team. Their winning project was a monumental 29-hour collaboration inspired by a historic California college rivalry. The dramatic leg tattoo brings this fierce battle to life by depicting the client’s alma mater, USC, defeating its rival, UCLA. The scene shows a screaming Trojan warrior holding a large gold chain above a conquered Bruin bear against a fiery Colosseum backdrop. #tattoos #tattoo #tattooartist #tattooconvention #event
