Exploring a real Cold War nuclear bunker beneath the ÚJV Řež research site in the Czech Republic. ☢️ Built to shelter hundreds of people, it still contains decontamination showers, old communications equipment, gas masks, emergency supplies, a 1960s Škoda diesel generator and even an emergency escape route through the rock. The bunker was flooded during the massive Czech floods of 2002, but much of it was later restored, and some of the original equipment still works today. It genuinely felt like walking into a piece of Cold War history frozen underground…. #coldwar #urbex #nuclearbunker #bunker #urbexworld
Nearly 40 years after the Goiânia radiological accident, traces of cesium-137 can still be detected. ☢️ We explored locations connected to the 1987 accident with a Radiacode 110, including areas where readings close to the surface can still reach around 2 μSv/h. The original Cs-137 source was broken open after being removed from an abandoned radiotherapy clinic, eventually spreading radioactive contamination through parts of the city. Decades of radioactive decay and a massive cleanup later, some traces can still be found today. #Goiania #Cesium137 #Radiation #Radiacode #nuclear
Inside a nuclear museum near Prague ☢️ From old reactor radiation alarms and Geiger counters to Nixie tube gamma spectrometers, dosimeter pens and equipment that actually worked inside nuclear facilities, ÚJV Řež has decades of radiation detection history packed into one place. Some of the instruments still work today… and strangely enough, even the museum building itself gives elevated radiation readings. We also added the museum to Radiaverse, so you can find it and check it out yourself if you’re ever nearby! #radiation #nuclear #science #radiacode #prague
A radioactive legacy hiding beneath Byron Bay ☢️ Heavy mineral sand mining began in the area in the 1930s, and monazite containing naturally radioactive thorium was part of those deposits. Some leftover material was later used as fill, helping create elevated radiation hotspots that can still be detected today. And yes, you can find some of these hotspots mapped on Radiaverse! 👀 #Radiation #Radioactive #Monazite #ByronBay #RadiaCode
Think how many times you probably went to a couple of museums (or places in general) without realizing you passed by something that is radioactive? ☢️ Radiacode gives you a “sixth sense”, allowing you to detect and see radiation! #radiacode #radiation #geiger #radium #nuclearscience
Yes, your Geiger counter can detect radiation. But can it understand the source? #radiation #radiacode #uranium #geiger #nuclear
Duration matters! I’ll say it again. DURATION MATTERS! #radiacode #radiation #geiger #fyp #nuclear
Where does Sodium-22 actually come from? ☢️🧪 With a half life of around 2.6 years, Na-22 is long lived enough to be useful as a calibration and demonstration source. But producing it requires something a little different. Na-22 sits on the proton rich side of the chart of nuclides, so instead of simply irradiating a target with neutrons in a reactor, it can be produced using a particle accelerator. An aluminum target is bombarded with high energy protons, creating tiny amounts of Na-22 within the foil. The sodium can then be chemically separated from the aluminum target. A lot of work for a very small amount of radioactive sodium. 🎥 —> @Simons Chemiebaukasten #sodium #chemistry #radiation #radioactive #scienceexperiments
We hunted down radioactive places other people had already discovered 👀☢️ in BUDAPEST! Using Radiaverse, we followed findings uploaded by other users around Europe and checked them out ourselves. From radioactive granite hidden in ordinary streets to fountains and buildings, you’d be surprised what people have found. And after following everyone else’s discoveries, we found a few of our own and added them to the map too. Have you checked what’s been found near you? Many thanks to @atomic_spallation (on Instagram) for finding these areas! #radiation #radioactive #granite #hungary #geiger
Some radioactive isotopes can tell us how long a rock has been exposed at the Earth’s surface! Aluminum-26 and Beryllium-10 occur naturally in incredibly tiny amounts, produced through interactions with cosmic rays. They might be far too scarce for a Radiacode to pick up in an ordinary piece of quartz, but specialized measurements of these isotopes can act like a geological clock, helping researchers determine how long rocks have been exposed at or near the surface... 🎥 —> @Simons Chemiebaukasten #radiation #chemistry #radioactive #spectroscopy #science
You never know what you’ll find at a flea market… sometimes it’s radioactive. ☢️ At a flea market in Budapest, we came across old radium-painted watches, uranium-glazed ceramics and plenty of other antiques worth checking with a Radiacode! (Thanks to @radminerals for helping us out and tagging along!) One seller even borrowed a detector to see which of his own watches were radioactive! Not everything we checked gave us a reading, but that’s half the fun of looking… #Radiacode #Radiation #Radioactive #FleaMarket #antiques
Sometimes radiation is placed directly inside a tumor on purpose! Iodine-125 is a radioactive isotope used in brachytherapy, where tiny sealed sources can deliver radiation directly to cancerous tissue while limiting exposure to surrounding areas. It has a half life of around 59 days and decays by electron capture, producing low energy photons and conversion electrons along the way. It’s a very different use of radioactivity from the samples we normally measure, but one with an important role in nuclear medicine. 🎥 —> @Simons Chemiebaukasten #nuclear #iodine #radiation #radioactive #chemistry
