One exercise we love working on is asking for obedience around distraction, then releasing the dog to be free and make their own choices, and rewarding them when they make the right ones. The goal isn’t a dog that only behaves when they’re told what to do — it’s a dog that understands how to make good decisions even when they have freedom. That’s how we build reliability beyond the leash and beyond the command. 🐾

A parade is more than just a walk down the street - it's a new environment filled with sights, sounds, people, and distractions that many dogs have never experienced before. Through our rescue and shelter network, we have the privilege of working with dogs and volunteers from Islip Animal Shelter who come to Maximum Canine twice a week to build confidence, learn obedience, and prepare for life outside the shelter when they find their forever home. For Mowgli and Shelly, this training is helping them put their best paw forward as they get ready to attend parades where they'll have the opportunity to meet potential adopters and show everyone the amazing dogs they are. During this session, we focused on preparing them for real-world situations they may encounter: 🐾Staying focused around loud noises and new environments 🐾Remaining calm while people approach and interact with them 🐾Working around each other and maintaining engagement 🐾Building confidence through structure and obedience Every training session is another step toward helping these dogs become the best versions of themselves - and finding the families they deserve.
