GENDER REVEAL This piece is about my experience as a mother to a trans/nonbinary child. I made the belly cast when I was pregnant with them and knew that one day I would make a statement with it but I had to find out who they were first! I grew up in a time and place where anything different was mocked openly and instead of exploring who I was out loud or speaking out for others I was very often quiet to keep myself safe from bullies in my home, at church and at school. It wasn’t until I became pregnant that I was finally able to stand up for myself. This baby made me brave and they still do everyday! The least I can do for them is to celebrate them and create a safe space for them to grow into who they are unconditionally with love and acceptance and protection. I have had to set a lot of boundaries around who has access to our family and lots of people have shown their true colors as I support my kiddo in showing theirs. Each quote around the edges of this piece is something that has been said to me or my kiddo directly and they are all very very wrong. Factually wrong. Gender is not sex. Gender is a social construct and for the individual it is a feeling and an identity that deserves to be respected without question. There are an infinite number of ways to identify and express your gender and someday I hope our world will be able to understand nuance a hell of a lot more that it seems capable of today! If you have made it this far and you are a part of the trans/nonbinary community, I hope this piece makes you feel seen and let’s you know that there is a mama bear out here who sees you, loves you and will continue to fight for you.
