If your friend jumped off a cliff, would you jump with him? Somewhere along the line, someone has to say no. That sounds obvious. But what happens when the people around you are the ones telling you that something is okay? When “brotherhood” means following the group instead of questioning it? When nobody wants to be the person who speaks up? That is a much bigger question than what happens at one fraternity, on one campus, or in one incident. And it brings us back to Cornell. Because the latest allegations are part of a much bigger conversation about fraternity culture, accountability, and what happens when young men don’t understand the meaning of “no." The question isn’t just what happened. It’s how people got to the point where people allowed it to happen. And whether anyone along the way could have stopped it. They tried to stop this project a hundred times. They are scared of me. They know I have what it takes to expose them. At some point, somebody has to be willing to challenge the system. Not just the people inside the fraternities, but the universities, the national organizations, and the people who have the authority to step in when things go wrong. Because this isn’t a new problem. It has been happening for generations. And the same questions keep coming back about who knew, who should have known, who had the power to act, and why they didn’t. That is what I have been investigating for years, including what happened at Cornell and what happens when institutions are forced to confront the culture that exists inside their own walls. As Gordon Gee, the president of West Virginia University, puts it: “Changing a university is like moving a graveyard.” And that’s the problem. Some systems become so entrenched that changing them means challenging the people and traditions that have protected them for decades. And eventually, somebody has to decide that protecting the system isn’t more important than protecting the people inside it. There’s a reason power and accountability have to go together. But in fraternities, we create a system where being accepted often means proving yourself to the people above you. Questioning them can make you an outsider. Speaking up can mean betraying the very group you’ve been taught to call your brothers. And when that culture is built around secrecy and loyalty, what happens to the people who are expected to follow the rules but have no real power to challenge them? We talk about fraternities building leaders and teaching young men about brotherhood. But those things mean very little if the system teaches them that power comes without responsibility. At some point, we have to ask whether the culture is actually building better men, or simply teaching them how to protect the system they belong to.
