As the North Atlantic Treaty Organization turns 75, geopolitics are shifting rapidly, with the West facing growing challenges from both Russia and China. NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator, known as DIANA, is on a mission to solve critical defense and security challenges by investing in cutting-edge technologies. With a staggering $1 billion fund, DIANA is empowering dozens of handpicked start-ups with access to top-tier defense expertise, investors, and resources to supercharge their growth. One of the key areas NATO is looking for solutions in is “sensing and surveillance” for subsea offshore zones. And it's actively recruiting tech disruptors to help counter and prevent any major attack beneath the waves. This week signifies the 850th anniversary of the Tower of Pisa specifically not falling over. And we have some pretty cool tech to thank for that. Precision drilling removed earth from under one side, which over time has helped Pisa straighten out its act. Now, the tower is watched around the clock by satellite and terrestrial sensors that can monitor even the slightest shift in the tower’s position. #pisa #italy #tourism #tech

Meet Codi, the medical collaborative robot of the future. Developed by Cobionix, a medical startup based in Peterborough, Ontario, it can perform many non-invasive medical tasks. With the support of its investors and MaRS Discovery District, North America’s largest urban innovation hub, Cobionix is charting the future of medicine. And leveraging the power of Codi to fill the care gap in the system. Will public perception evolve as fast as the technology itself? And how will human patients respond to robots in healthcare? #robot #tech #medicine

Scientists in Japan have found a way to attach so-called skin equivalents to robot faces, for more realistic facial expressions. Artificial skin, made in a lab from living cells, isn’t new. It’s already soft to the touch and can actually heal itself. But until now, attaching living tissue to a robotic undercarriage has been the stuff of sci-fi fever dreams. And it’s a glimpse into a future with skin-covered robots. #robots #humanity #technology

China’s leader Xi Jinping calls the COMAC C919 jet “the dream of a nation.” And it symbolizes China’s determination to achieve self-reliance in every aspect of advanced technology. The domestically-made narrow body passenger plane was designed to compete with two popular rivals, the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. Together those two western corporations control about 90 percent of the global aircraft market. With growing demand from airlines, and Boeing’s recent safety issues, most notably involving their 737 Max, China is determined to offer an alternative. And ultimately smash the Airbus-Boeing duopoly. But there’s no shortage of turbulence ahead for the C919. Despite being assembled in China, it relies on parts made elsewhere. The US also named COMAC as a company "owned or controlled" by the People's Liberation Army. And the C919 also lacks certifications from aviation regulators in the US and Europe. But it may yet become a regional player and give Boeing and Airbus a run for their money in Asia. Do you think we’ll see large-scale adoption of the C919 outside of China any time soon? And would you fly in one? Follow Technality for all things future, tech & humanity. #tech #china #aviation #plane

China's space program is moving ahead at breakneck speed, fast enough that NASA is openly worried about. NASA administrator Bill Nelson recently claimed that China could attempt a lunar land grab, similar to its claims over the South China Sea here on Earth. Since 2007, China's Chang'e missions have closed the gap with the U.S. and Russia in lunar exploration. And now it’s getting ready to embark on a groundbreaking mission to the moon's far side. Chang'e-6, launched in the spring of 2024, aims to collect samples there, a first in history. Scientists have described the South Pole as the "golden belt" for lunar exploration, because of the potential for using polar ice found there. Water ice is an important source of hydrogen and oxygen, which could be used to make breathable oxygen, rocket fuel, or drinking water. And ultimately power future exploration and prolonged missions. China’s celestial ambitions are clearly here to stay. In the next episodes of this series, we’ll explore its geopolitical strategy to win the long game here on Earth. Follow Technality for all things future, tech & humanity. #china #space #nasa #moon

The Fujian is China’s largest ever and most advanced aircraft carrier, and it is a physical representation of the country’s ambitions at sea. With a weight of over 80,000 tonnes and the capacity to hold 60 to 70 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, the Fujian sets a new standard for China’s growing navy. The new aircraft carrier is also equipped with technology previously only available to the US Navy. #china #navy #geopolitics #tech
