80 years ago today, on June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. The bravery, sacrifice and determination shown by those courageous troops changed the course of history. They faced daunting odds and harrowing conditions, but through grit and valor, they prevailed. Today, as a member of the United States Space Force, I reflect on my own journey of service that began in 2005. I think about the legacy of those D-Day heroes and all those who've worn the uniform throughout our nation's history. From the beaches of Normandy to the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan to the final frontier of space, the spirit of the American warrior remains unbroken and unbowed. I served as an enlisted member until 2016, then took on the awesome responsibility of being a commissioned officer. Now, I have the profound honor of being part of the newest branch of our military, boldly facing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in space. The world has changed much since 1944, but the core values of service, duty, and courage remain constant. On this solemn anniversary, we remember the fallen and honor their memory. We draw strength from their example as we forge ahead, protecting our nation's interests in new domains. Just as the Greatest Generation met the defining challenge of their time, we stand ready to defend freedom and project power on the ultimate high ground. May we never forget the sacrifices made on D-Day and always strive to be worthy of the legacy they've passed down to us. In the face of adversity and the unknown, we will meet the challenges of our time with the same resolve and valor as the heroes who came before us.
