The Australian Democrats 🟩🟡 Continuing my series about Minor Parties in Australia with a group who set the entire movement back a generation. One of the most successful minor parties in the history of the country, at their peak the Australian Democrats had NINE federal senators and the balance of power in the senate. They spoke a big game about holding the major parties to account & they were absolutely the face of the third party / minor party movement for a couple of decades or more. Once they finally HELD that power though, in the early 2000s, they rubber-stamped the GST for Howard AND they signed preference deals with Labor & The Greens in an attempt to lock in THEIR power (in a complete backflip from what they said they'd do to their members). So naturally, their entire voter base reacted accordingly & wiped them off the board in response. Trying to claim credit for the feminine hygiene products not being included in the GST when they are the SPECIFIC REASON that women paid taxes on tampons for almost 20 years is just shameful. They CAUSED that problem, they didn't PREVENT it, and they clearly cannot be trusted in matters of truth. Don't even get me started on "every day food items" and the difference between frozen pies or cooked ones... they're relying on your ignorance & poor memory. Whenever you hear someone over the age of 40 say that "all politicians are the same, they all break promises, they're all just self interested" it is precisely BECAUSE OF THE AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS that those people feel that way. We had a thriving & robust minor party presence in Australia and the Australian Democrats betrayal of their voter base CAUSED the near death of it. They CAUSED the growth of disenfranchised & disengaged voters in this country.
