I think he knows he’s pretty

A year ago we got to paddle in the coolest place ever (literally!) I’d been wanting to make it here for years, and finally found a day to do it. This summer, that lake is closed to paddling to help prevent aquatic invasive species. I get the closure, but I’m glad we were able to have the experience while we could.

Gary’s been on top of the world

In 2016, a fluffy 12-year old cat was plucked from the streets of Fort McMurray while the city had been evacuated due to a raging forest fire and brought to Edmonton. Numerous attempts to re-unite him with his owner were unsuccessful and after a few months he was destined to be sent to the humane society. For a senior kitty with asthma, heart disease, worms and a hernia, that would have probably been a one way trip. Instead, his new mom who had been volunteering with the evacuated animals was able to adopt him. She had his hernia repaired, treated his worms and brought him back to his retirement home (much to Gary’s never-ceasing disapproval). Having had mostly enough adventures for nine lives, Carl was most at home purring in someone’s lap (he wasn’t picky in the slightest about who it belonged to, as long as it was warm), or beating up Gary for the preferred seat in the house. He loved sunbeams so much that in the summer, his normally jet black patches of fur would get bleached into an almost light brown. Though not as keen on hiking as Gary, he still liked being outside and he especially loved coming on vacations with us. He was a great traveller and always felt at home wherever we were staying, whether it was a hotel or in the van. Every night at bedtime he would jump up and demand to be scratched (and to nibble gently on my fingers) before he would settle down for the night curled up against our legs. Over the past few months he was starting to show his age a little bit, though with treatment for arthritis still was as mischievous as ever. Last week however, he suddenly went blind. His tests all seemed clean and we had started him on medication prescribed by his ophthalmologist to see if it would make a difference. He didn’t let not seeing get in his way, and still was able to find his favourite napping spots and his food bowl. Sadly though, only a few days later he lost the ability to use his left legs and we knew we would have to say goodbye. Carl was euthanized at home, surrounded by his parents and siblings after spending a last day full of cuddles and sunbeams. He was my friend. I loved him very much and I miss him immeasurably
