A shifting river, a century-long disagreement, and a peaceful agreement that changed the border between Texas and Mexico. On October 28, 1967, the United States and Mexico officially exchanged land to resolve the Chamizal dispute in El Paso. The new river channel opened the following year. But this story is about more than international diplomacy. Thousands of El Paso residents had to leave their homes and neighborhoods as the border changed. October 28, 2026 marked 59 years since that historic land exchange. Today, Chamizal National Memorial preserves the story of the agreement and its lasting impact. Have you visited the memorial, or does your family remember this chapter of El Paso history? A Texas woman helped preserve one of the state's most important historical documents. 📜👀 Shortly after becoming Texas Secretary of State in 1927, Jane McCallum discovered an original copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence stored in a Capitol vault. She helped advance efforts to preserve the document and make it available for public display. But her story goes beyond that discovery. McCallum was also a suffrage organizer, writer, and public servant who spent years working to shape Texas history. Had you heard of Jane McCallum before today? Photos and document: Jane Y. McCallum, circa 1900, unknown photographer, Austin History Center/Austin Public Library, via Wikimedia Commons, public domain. Before the Stockyards selfies, there was a whole working world here! 🤠🐂 The Fort Worth Stockyards wasn't always the popular destination Texans know today. Railroads, livestock pens, meatpacking plants, traders, and hardworking people helped turn this part of Fort Worth into a major livestock market. What visitors now recognize for its historic buildings, longhorns, and Western atmosphere was once a bustling center of the cattle industry. And for generations of Texans, the Stockyards has become a place filled with family memories. Have you visited? What's your favorite Fort Worth Stockyards memory? Photos: Carol M.
