The simple process of making a table top. It’s cool how a little bit of video editing on Instagram can consolidate a 7 hour long process into a bite size clip for so many to enjoy and learn about. In this video, I am making a table top for a small work desk in my custom wood shop. In simple terms the process goes as such: 1) obtain 2x4’s from Home Depot 2) cut them to length 3) run all four sides of each plank over a jointer 4) perform a nice tight wood glue up 5) run the glue up through a drum sander 6) screw it down to your cabinet tops 7) admire and enjoy the fruits of your labor This process is quite universal for many of the custom tables we make, the high end furniture, the handmade pieces, it is just different wood, different sizes, different shapes. No matter what the project, a individual client looking for butcher block custom counter tops, an interior designer looking for a looking craftsman to create a custom dining table, or an office manager looking to stun the office by obtaining a high end conference table, @outer_woods has you covered. #handmadefurniture #customwoodworking #atxinteriordesign #processvideo #visualasmr #howitsmade

So you’ve decided to chase your dreams? Here’s the honest truth. When I was working a 9-5 as a biomedical engineer, I always very much wanted to set out on my own, become an entrepreneur, chase the dream of owning my own business. During that time, I was not at all naive to the fact that those who had done this before me said it was “hard”, “you will be very stressed”, “there is so much uncertainty and anxiety that comes along with it”. I really did hear those words and understand them CONCEPTUALLY, but here is the very difficult part. You understand that in the context of someone else’s life, and if it more of a distant amorphous feeling. It’s like reading a textbook about rocket science vs actually performing rocket science. Things get very real when the long hours, the financial insecurity, the constant stress, the constant mental gymnastics happen in your own life. When you see the business effecting YOUR relationships, the time YOU don’t have, the things YOU can’t afford anymore, let me tell you, it hits different than seeing that happen to a complete stranger. Because of this, entrepreneurs and small business owners are constantly fending off this anxiety, and comically, these daily mental breakdowns. My advice to those entrepreneurs and small business owners going through this, who want to make a go of it: 1) have a network of like minded people you can talk to 2) 5 years working 8 hour days is better than flaming out after 1 year working 12 hour days 3) realize that it is a long process, and good things take so much time and so many tiny steps 4) laugh your way through it, find the humor in it, make the tough parts feel funny and lighthearted rather than destructive and crippling. Keep moving forward, feel free to reach out and talk to your fellow small business owners, creators, and entrepreneurs @outer_woods #texassmallbusiness #smallbusinessowners #entrepreneurtip #relatablecontent #relatablehumor #handmadewood #artistssupportingartists

That’s a rare table, and here’s why: Start listing wood species in your head, and think what comes up first: 1) pine? 2) maple? 3) white oak? 4) walnut? We could keep going, but I bet we’d have to get pretty deep into your list before we got to the species Guanacaste, if it was even on there at all. Guanacaste is a species that is rare to the states because it doesn’t grow here at all. This is a mighty tree found in the forests of Costa Rica. Much more than that, this slab is responsibly harvested from a tree that was already dead. To be able to procure a pristine slab of Guanacaste that was the correct length, width, shape, and quality fit for this custom office desk is a very difficult thing to do. That’s why when you walk into 999 offices out of 1000, they’ll have a stock office desk, probably made out of particle board and fake veneer. As well, this live edge slab of Guanacaste is entirely whole. It is not cut up into lumber and glued together with a fake live edge. This is an uninterrupted, unbroken, solid piece of jungle hardwood. Here’s the thing, you spend 1/3 of your life, if not more, working at your job, and much of that time is spent sitting right there at your desk. What does it say about your time there, the work you do, the person you are if your battle station is the same quality that it was when you were in study hall in high school. What message does that send to clients? They walk in and see a cluttered desk from IKEA yet they expect you to perform phenomenal work for them. Instead, if you had a 100% custom, 100% handmade artisan desk made out of a rare wood species in the states, what does that say? How would that inspire you to be a better professional every day? How would that impress your colleagues that you compete with? How would that show up for that important client who always subliminally notices the ways you carry yourself and your work? Food for thought, but I bet it would serve you well. #atxinteriordesign #commercialinteriordesign #residentialinteriordesign #customfurnituredesign #handmadefurniture #liveedgefurniture
