Which stage are you in?

Five years ago on our 10 anniversary Heidi and I renewed our wedding vows. A lot of people laughed and asked why we did that? "Didn't you mean it the first time?" I personally can not say enough about how meaningful it was for us to renew our vows. To me the words we said that day felt so much more meaningful than the first time. Having been married for 10 years and gone through so much together, the words held so much more weight. Having been there, done that, we now know and fully understand what those words mean. And still chose to say them. After 10 years we chose each other again.

15 years ago, I got down on one knee and asked Heidi to marry me for the first time. About a year ago I realized that it shouldn't be the last time. Marriage is not a finish line or a destination. It is a journey that you have to re-commit to every single day. Do I have to drop to one knee every couple weeks just to show her my commitment? I hope not. I hope my actions already show it. But, the physical gesture is just as much for me as it is her. A reminder to myself to stop everything else I'm doing and say out loud, "will you marry me, today?" Spoiler alert: she said yes. Again.

When our 3rd son turned 1, we knew there was something wrong. He was an extremely pleasant and fun baby, but he wasn't even crawling yet at a year old. We got him evaluated and found out he had an inguinal hernia and needed surgery. Once that happened he immediately started to become more active but was still barely crawling and not yet walking. He then was fitted for ankle braces with the idea that if his ankles were less flexible his brain could easier focus on what his legs needed to do. As much as we wanted to be worried, we knew that playing the compare game was not going to help him. Every single kid develops on their own timeline. We just needed to give him the help he needs and allowed him the time and space to figure it out. And little by little he did. At 17 months, 25 days old he took his first steps on his own. I remember lifting him up in the air with happy tears filling my eyes as I called for my wife to come join us. I'll never forget that day.

I’m not even sure where to start… This year’s mini golf open was one for the books. Not only did we raise over $20,000 for Respite Care, we had a lot of fun doing it! First off, I want to say thank you to the builders. You absolutely CRUSHED it. We had 18 holes of the most interesting, well designed, and all around fun holes of golf. AND they all weathered a legit hail storm! It’s crazy to think that you can only play these specific courses one weekend ever because they were better than a lot of permanent courses out there! Thank you to the community. YOU showed up, and brought the energy that this event is all about. Some of you stood in line for over an hour to do so but made the most of it. In the midst of it, we even got hailed on and had to shelter in place. I shared the roof of the stage with 60 of you as we sung songs and joked around while we waited for the storm to pass. Your willingness to roll with the punches and keep things fun is what makes all of this not only possible but so enjoyable. Also, thank you to the random trained meteorologist that was also sheltering in place with us that gave us an EXTREMELY accurate prediction of what to expect. Thank you to New Belgium for hosting us and this wild idea. Thank you for always being willing to say “YES” and for giving our community a platform to be creative. Between this, Tour de Fat, and everything else you do, you’ve become such an important part of the creative culture of Fort Collins. You don’t just exist in this community—you help shape it, giving people a place to gather, create, experiment, and bring weird ideas to life. Next year will be bigger and better. We WILL be able to accept electronic payments and check-ins that you can do from your phone to eliminate the line, (praise Jesus). You may still have to wait, but you can do so while getting food and drinks and wandering around! I cannot tell you how much joy it brings me to get to throw this event each year. My team and I don’t take a single cent from this event. I am so thankful that our channel gives us the ability to do things like this with our community.
