The Parking Lot (2004) — A 22 min ethnographic documentary about teenagers and parking lot culture in Burlington, North Carolina circa 2004. “The youth in America have often found themselves with free time but few options to enjoy it. This is particularly true in small towns. Changing social norms as well as laws about private property and loitering have made it even more difficult for young people to "hang out." This problem is acutely evident among the youth in Burlington, North Carolina. For many local teenagers, parking lots have provided a place to gather, socialize, and compete. This video explores the parking lot culture of Burlington youth, particularly in how youth construct distinct identities in relation to each other, other youth groups, and the adults they encounter. The major "vehicle" for establishing these identities are specific types of cars - the mustang club, the truckers, and the fast, "souped-up" cars - exposing a culture dominated by competitive males.” Watch the full film at Folkstreams.net https://www.folkstreams.net/films/parking-lot — #folkstreams #folklore #folklife #southernculture #youthculture #customs #carculture #parkinglots #customcars#burlingtonnc #northcarolina #customtrucks #hotrods #cartok #trucktok #parkinglot #winndixie #y2k #00s #00snostalgia #y2kstyle

Anything I Catch (1990)- a 30 min documentary on the traditions of handfishing in Louisiana available for free at Folkstreams.net! — Louisiana filmmaker, Pat Mire, teams up with veteran filmmaker and cinematographer, Charles Bush, to capture the natural drama of handfishing in this award-winning documentary. Highly visual, the film examines the thrilling regional phenomenon of Cajuns who wade in murky bayou waters to catch huge catfish and turtles by reaching into hollow logs and stumps with their bare hands. Friends and family accompany the handfisherman to the bayou banks for Cajun music, festive cooking, and storytelling, and to witness this increasingly rare tradition. Told from the inside with multiple voices, Mire and Bush explore the chain of events set off by man’s attempt to "improve" his environment by dredging bayous in this remarkable study of the relationship between cultural and natural resources.
