El Niño is getting stronger, and you don’t have to live near the tropical Pacific to feel its effects. A stronger El Niño can mean more high-tide flooding, even without a storm. Even at its biggest this year, Antarctic sea ice was unusually small. Sea ice grows during Antarctica’s winter and retreats in spring. This year, its likely winter peak was the third lowest in the satellite record. And here’s the striking part: the four lowest winter peaks have all happened in the past four years. Then the ice retreated rapidly. By early October, its extent was at record lows for that time of year. Scientists are investigating why, including the possible role of warmer ocean water. Antarctica’s sea ice history is highly variable, so untangling the causes takes careful research. #Explore the observations at Climate.us.

She put his scientific paper on a dartboard. Then they became friends. Lisa Sloan used computer models to study ancient climates. Scott Wing studied fossil plants. Her models suggested cold winters. His fossils pointed to warmth. He published a sharp critique, and she was devastated. But then they met—and kept talking. Eventually, they started checking each other’s work, helping explain a warming event about 56 million years ago, when global temperatures rose roughly 9 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. The lesson? Fossils and models each reveal part of the picture. Working together helped these scientists see more of it.
