River and Wyatt are always together. Recently we noticed River is more than a friend to Wy, she’s taken on the role of guiding him on his blind side. One of our staff members noticed each time he approached them on the tractor, River would push into Wyatt’s blind side and move him out of the way.

Replying to @Liz Ending a life is not something we take lightly. We have humanely euthanized 9 horses during our time in rescue when it was the kindest and only option left. Ending Kele’s life when he still has options available, and when we have seen improvement with his care plan, is not something we are willing to do. There are horses with similar non-surgical orthopedic conditions who have gone on to have comfortable, meaningful lives with proper management, and we owe it to him to explore those options first. If there is a way to manage his pain, support his body, and give him more good days, we will do that. Euthanasia is a compassionate tool, but it should be the last resort, not the first option when other avenues have not been explored. As caretakers, there are moments when it becomes clear there are no other humane choices. This is not one of those times.
