😔 Tragically, mass shootings are so common now that parents have to figure out how to talk to their kids about them. It’s hard to know where to start.   ☝🏽 First, don’t dismiss their fears or avoid the topic out of concern for scaring them more. Sadly, we can’t shield our kids from the fact that this happens—between the news, hearing other kids talk, and enduring active shooter drills at school, kids know mass shootings happen.   🚫 Telling them not to worry about it or that it could never happen where you live is unlikely to be comforting.   So what *should* you say? Well, that depends, based on their age and temperament.   ➡️ Under age 8: The AAP says kids this age can’t process tragedy well, so unless a mass shooting affects your family directly or your child is likely to hear about it from another source, you don’t need to have this convo with little kids. If needed, you can keep it simple, just one sentence like, “A bad person hurt people.”   ➡️ Big kids: Answer their Qs, and try to avoid them seeing any pictures. If they do, balance them with photos of people helping and supporting each other in the aftermath. Focus on the heroes who helped.   ➡️ Tweens/teens: Ask what they’ve heard about the shooting, and how it makes them feel. Use it as a chance to talk about mental health, gun control, and other topics that align with your family values. They may want solutions, and you can talk about what actions you might take together.   What would you add to this conversation?   #ScriptsForParents #TalkingToKids #ShootingResponse #Parenting #StopTheViolence

Your kids could be facing stricter rules about using their phones at school.   A new bipartisan bill in Congress would give states money to help keep students off their personal devices throughout the school day.   Introduced in late September, the bill would offer funding to states with policies banning student cell phone, smartwatch and other personal device use from the first bell to the last.   That money could help schools pay for lockers, lockboxes or pouches to store devices. The bill includes exceptions for students who need them for medical reasons or accommodations through an IEP or 504 plan.   Plenty of states are already taking action. At least 39 states and Washington, D.C., require schools to ban or restrict cell phone use, according to Education Week.   And teachers say the distraction is a real problem. In a 2024 Pew Research Center report, 72% of U.S. high school teachers said students getting distracted by cell phones was a major problem in their classrooms.   Has phone use been an issue at your kids’ schools? Do you think keeping phones put away all day would help?   #CellphoneBans #CellphonesInSchool #Screentime
