The real goal of SLAP tear rehab isn’t simply becoming pain-free. It’s getting your life back. When your shoulder hurts every day, reducing that pain naturally becomes your immediate priority. But think about why you actually want the pain gone. Maybe you want to bench press again. Do pull-ups. Surf. Box. Play golf. Train CrossFit. Practice martial arts. Play with your kids. Or simply walk into the gym without worrying about your shoulder. That changes how we should think about SLAP tear rehabilitation. Pain reduction matters. But if you want to return to demanding physical activity, your shoulder also needs to rebuild capacity. That means progressively developing strength, stability, mobility, control, and load tolerance. Eventually, your shoulder needs appropriate exposure to the demands of the activities you actually want to perform. That’s why rehabilitation shouldn’t become the destination. Rehabilitation is the bridge back to performance. Because the ultimate goal isn’t just having a shoulder that doesn’t hurt. It’s having a shoulder that allows you to confidently do the things that make you feel like yourself again. #SLAPTear #SLAPTearRehab #ShoulderRehab #LabrumTear #ReturnToSport

Rotator cuff strengthening shouldn’t necessarily stop when your shoulder stops hurting. After tearing the labrum in both shoulders, I could barely perform external rotation with half a kilogram. Today, I can do seven kilograms. That progression came from treating my rotator cuff like something I wanted to make genuinely strong, not simply something I needed to rehabilitate temporarily. External rotation has remained part of every upper-body workout I’ve done since my SLAP tears. That’s because structural balance matters. Your subscapularis internally rotates the shoulder and gets plenty of involvement during pressing exercises. But your shoulder external rotators don’t receive the same direct strengthening simply because you do rows and pull-ups. So I train external rotation directly. And just like any other strength exercise, I progressively overload it. The key is making those increases appropriate. Going from a 5 kg dumbbell to 7.5 kg is a 50% increase in load. For a rotator cuff exercise, that can be an enormous jump. Small wrist weights allow me to increase resistance much more gradually and control exactly how quickly I progress. After my SLAP tears, I started at 0.5 kg. Today, I reached 7 kg. That’s a 14-fold increase in load. That represents what I believe shoulder rehabilitation should ultimately become. Build the weak links. Restore structural balance. Progressively overload them. And build a shoulder capable of handling the training and activities you want to return to. #SLAPTear #RotatorCuff #RotatorCuffExercises #ShoulderRehab #StructuralBalance

Physical therapy and returning to high-level performance are not necessarily the same thing. Physical therapy played an important role in rehabilitating my own SLAP tears. But I eventually reached a point where reducing shoulder pain wasn’t enough. I wanted to return to pull-ups, handstands, heavy pressing, advanced calisthenics, and serious strength training. That required my shoulder rehabilitation to gradually become strength training. Early SLAP tear rehab exercises can be extremely valuable. But if your goal is returning to demanding physical activity, your shoulder eventually needs to tolerate more. More load. More range of motion. More volume. More challenging movements. The transition should be progressive, but there needs to be a transition. We’ve coached people with SLAP tears who had already completed months of physical therapy and made genuine progress. Their problem wasn’t necessarily that physical therapy had failed. They simply hadn’t yet rebuilt enough capacity to train the way they wanted to train. That gap between rehabilitation and performance matters. The goal shouldn’t be doing rehab exercises forever. The goal is progressively rebuilding strength, stability, mobility, structural balance, and load tolerance until your shoulder can handle the activities you care about again. Rehabilitation needs a destination. #SLAPTear #SLAPTearRehab #PhysicalTherapy #ShoulderRehab #ShoulderStrength
