This Radio Station Killed 800,000 People RTLM – Rwandan Radio Station (1993 – 1994) Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines, known across Rwanda simply as RTLM, was a private radio station that began broadcasting from Kigali in 1993. 📻 It launched sounding like harmless entertainment, but within a year it became one of the deadliest propaganda machines in modern history. 😨 RTLM was founded by history professor Ferdinand Nahimana and lawyer Jean-Bosco Barayagwiza, and funded through Rwanda's ruling party. 🏛️ Its largest shareholder was Rwanda's own president, Juvénal Habyarimana. 👑 At first, listeners tuned in for pop music, comedy sketches, and football commentary, and RTLM quickly became the country's most popular station. 🎶 But beneath the entertainment, the tone shifted — certain groups were mocked, certain people were named as enemies, and the broadcasts grew darker by the day. ⚠️ On April 6, 1994, President Habyarimana's plane was shot down over Kigali, and the killing began within hours. ✈️ RTLM stayed on air throughout, reading out names, addresses, and neighborhoods, telling ordinary citizens where to look and who to find. 🎙️ Rwandans began calling it "Radio Machete." 🔪 In the 100 days that followed, more than 800,000 people were killed — one of the fastest genocides ever recorded. 🕯️ RTLM finally went silent in July 1994, as opposing forces advanced on Kigali. 📴 In 2003, a United Nations tribunal convicted RTLM's founders of genocide and incitement — the first such conviction of media executives since the Nuremberg trials. ⚖️ #rwanda #history #RTLM #historytime #rwanda🇷🇼 #darkhistory

The Soviet Leader Who Nearly Ended the World Nikita Khrushchev – Soviet Leader (1894–1971) Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was one of the most powerful and unpredictable leaders of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. ☭ Born on April 15, 1894, in Kalinovka in the Russian Empire, Khrushchev came from a poor working-class family and spent his youth working in mines and factories. ⛏️ He joined the Communist movement, rose through the Soviet political system, and survived Joseph Stalin’s purges. ⚠️ After Stalin’s death in 1953, Khrushchev emerged as Soviet leader. 🇷🇺 In 1956 he shocked the Communist Party with his famous “Secret Speech,” denouncing Stalin’s cult of personality and exposing his crimes. 📜 Under Khrushchev, the USSR entered a new phase of the Cold War. 🚀 The USSR launched Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, in 1957, intensifying the Space Race with the US. 🌍 His government also confronted the West over Berlin, culminating in the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. 🧱 But Khrushchev’s most dangerous confrontation came in October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the Soviet Union secretly placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida. ☢️ For thirteen terrifying days, the United States and Soviet Union stood closer to nuclear war than ever before. 😨 Khrushchev eventually agreed to withdraw the missiles after negotiations with President John F. Kennedy, helping prevent a catastrophic nuclear conflict. 🤝 But the crisis damaged his political standing, and in October 1964, while Khrushchev was away from Moscow, his rivals moved against him. He was removed from power, stripped of his leadership positions, and largely disappeared from Soviet public life. 📺 Nikita Khrushchev remains one of the most fascinating figures of the Cold War — the coal miner’s son who challenged Stalin’s legacy, confronted the United States, and came dangerously close to nuclear war. #NikitaKhrushchev #ColdWar #CubanMissileCrisis #SovietUnion #HistoryTok

He Lost an Election—Then Cancelled Democracy | Leabua Jonathan Leabua Jonathan – Lesotho’s First Prime Minister (1914–1987) Joseph Leabua Jonathan was the first prime minister of independent Lesotho, leading the mountain kingdom from 1966 until his overthrow in 1986. His political career began with the promise of independence—but became a story of cancelled elections, authoritarian rule, and military betrayal. Born on October 30, 1914, in Leribe, in what was then Basutoland, Jonathan rose to power through the Basotho National Party (BNP). He became prime minister in 1965 and helped lead the country to independence from Britain on October 4, 1966. But in January 1970, election returns indicated that his party was heading for defeat. Instead of surrendering power, Jonathan declared a state of emergency, suspended the constitution, and annulled the election. Opposition leaders were imprisoned, and King Moshoeshoe II was forced into exile. The country entered a prolonged period of rule by decree. Yet Jonathan’s legacy contains a striking contradiction. While suppressing political opposition at home, he increasingly challenged apartheid in neighbouring South Africa and allowed the African National Congress (ANC) to establish a presence in Lesotho. South Africa’s blockade intensified the pressure on his government. On January 20, 1986, Lesotho’s own military, led by Major General Justin Metsing Lekhanya, overthrew Jonathan in a coup—ending roughly two decades in power. Jonathan was later placed under house arrest and eventually allowed to seek medical treatment in South Africa. He died in Pretoria on April 5, 1987, aged 72. The ballot couldn’t remove him. His own army did. #LeabuaJonathan #Lesotho #AfricanHistory #DarkHistory #HistoryShorts
