How to teach your dog STAY in under one minute ⏱️🐕🔥 First things first—grab some 🔥 tasty treats. Step one: put your dog in a sit. The second that sit hits, mark and reward ✅🍖 Now we start building the stay 🧱 Take one step back, pause… mark and reward 👣 Add another step… mark and reward I worked all the way up to three steps, rewarding every successful hold 💪🐾 Today I’m working with my girl Birdie, a Dachshund (wiener dog) mix puppy 🌭🐶 We’re out in the real world, and stay is ESSENTIAL for her learning and safety 🚦 Here’s what most people miss 🚨 You CANNOT teach stay without teaching the release word 🧠 On the third rep, I introduced “FREE” 🔓 “Free” is the ONLY way she’s allowed to get up—from sit-stay, down-stay, ANY stay. No guessing. No breaking position ❌ About 15 minutes later, this was the result… Birdie holding a sit-stay in the middle of the street 😤🔥 Leash dropped. I walked back four steps. Then released her with FREE 🎯 If I can do this in under 20 minutes, YOU can too 💯 This is day two of basic obedience and day one of learning stay. Day 1 at SK9 with Oliver the Golden Retriever 🦮💛 and listen—Day 1 is NOT training, it’s the evaluation 👀📋 This is where I learn the dog, his habits, his mindset, his energy, and exactly what we need to work on and how we’re gonna do it 💪🏽🧠 And I’m not gonna sugarcoat it 😅 Day 1 with Oliver was ROUGH. Within the first 5 minutes, he trampled over Birdie 🐾💥 and moved like he’s never seen a leash a day in his life. Straight wild, sporadic energy ⚡️😵‍💫 I had his owners walk him before drop-off… and that walk? WILD 🚶‍♂️💨 Pulling, leading, zero structure—Oliver did everything he wasn’t supposed to do. After they left, I ran a solo walk with him to really learn him, and sure enough—he pulled the entire time 😮‍💨❌ But here’s the key 🔑👉 It’s okay. He doesn’t know any better. This is Day 1. Birdie’s Day 1 at SK9 Basic Obedience 1 🐾💥 A Dachshund mix here to build structure, confidence, and real obedience. Day 1 is all about evaluation—learning who Birdie is before we shape the training plan. On the leash she’s timid, leaning, drifting left to right with no structure, distracted by squirrels 🐿️ and reactive to her surroundings.
