Construction takes a toll on more than your body. More than 5,000 construction workers die by suicide each year. Construction workers are more than twice as likely to die by suicide as other male workers and five times more likely to die by suicide than from a workplace injury. Those numbers deserve our attention. In an industry built around toughness, there can be pressure to push through stress, exhaustion, pain and personal struggles without talking about them. But looking out for the people you work beside should be just as much a part of jobsite culture as looking out for their physical safety. This World Mental Health Day, here are a few ways we can look out for each other: 👉 Know the resources available. Know where to point someone if they need professional or crisis support. In the US or Canada, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. 👉 Don’t make burnout a badge of honor. Constant exhaustion and stress shouldn’t automatically be accepted as “part of the job.” 👉 Offer practical help. Support doesn’t always have to start with a big conversation. Sometimes it’s helping with a task, paperwork or something else that takes a little weight off someone’s shoulders. 👉 Check in more than once. A simple “How are you doing?” matters. So does asking again next week. 👉 Respect privacy. You can let someone know you’re there without pressuring them to talk before they’re ready. 👉 And maybe most importantly: Make it normal to talk about mental health in the trades. Looking out for each other shouldn’t stop at physical safety. 📷 Jada Finch, Pink Collar #worldmentalhealthday #MensMentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #ConstructionSafety
