I summited Pikes Peak 6 months after dying during delivery. Mentally, I was STILL not there. It was STILL a battle process for me. I was so angry for what happened so killing my body on this mountain felt great. Everyone’s timeline is different. Unforseen complications or setbacks can play an effect. Healing is rarely a linear process. I spent a lot of time with God, working out, cooking, being present with my family. Be patient with yourself. I was asked to speak before 12,000 aspiring medical professionals this summer. As I shared my story, I could feel hope flooding my body… hoping that the story of one woman who almost lost her life while giving birth, would impact the entire room. My hope is that they will carry this story into their medical careers and advocate for their sisters, partners, neighbors, friends and complete strangers in the delivery room. My hope is that the power and knowledge in that room will lead to better outcomes for women. That birth will some day be completely risk free. Or that, in the worst case scenario… they know how to take action. Because now they know someone. Now they know someone this happened to.
