The tattoo I’ve been wanting for a while now. Right over the scar from the thing that pumped chemo into my heart, my port. I met a girl in Vegas that also was a cancer survivor. Her port scar was in the exact same spot as mine. So we got tattoos over our scars together of our cancer ribbons. Mine, lime green. My body was giving out on me way before I realized it. Before the swollen lymph nodes, before the pain, there was extreme exhaustion. I was falling asleep EVERY WHERE. I dismissed it to long hours at work and having 3 teenagers that were all athletes with endless activities. I was waking up in the middle of the night soaked in sweat. My skin itched so bad. I was going through episodes where I would be scratching my face, scalp, legs, stomach. Some times the itching would wake me out of my sleep. Then the pain in my shoulder came. I couldn’t even lift my left arm or move it at one point. I dismissed that as going too heavy or hard during workouts. Then out of the blue my lymph nodes under my left arm and on the left side of my neck swelled. I had pain in my abdomen, my side, my groin area. After all this the drs still kept dismissing me. I kept getting told I was young, “healthy”, and fine. God bless the ENT in Stanford that dug deeper. Stage IV composite non-Hodgkin Lymphoma was my diagnosis. I was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma that was in my bone marrow and Diffuse Large B Cell that had spread to every lymph node in my body. I said all that to say this…do not ignore the signs like I did. And definitely advocate for yourself. Looking back now, I knew there was something seriously wrong but I didn’t want to accept it.
