We get asked every day how to run electricity in CEB homes. The short answer is “the same way we’ve run electricity through structural masonry walls for the past century”. Namely, with masonry drill bits, cutting blades, and chisels. In this case, we wanted an outlet on our front patio, so we had to feed a wire and mount a box in our own 100-year-old structural brick wall. This video shows the process…which would be the same on a CEB wall…or any kind of masonry wall for that matter. Note that an important part of masonry is that the mortar should be equal strength or weaker strength when compared to the masonry unit itself. This home was built with lime mortar, so we stuck with that. If you point the joints with cement mortar on a wall like this, moisture will get trapped in the bricks and will soon start to cause spelling. #masonry #earthenmasonry #limemortar #brickwork #structuralmasonry @Jo @That Masonry Girl @Luvjoy @Texas Cob Co @Uncle Mud @Civic Saint @Steven Means889

People are always asking how CEB walls perform in cold climates. This is a video of our own CEB garage enduring one of many snow showers in Colorado Springs. Over five years, these walls have endured about 500 freeze/thaw cycles, and have experienced no deterioration. These CEBs are made up of 92% onsite overburden (waste) dirt and 8% Portland cement. This small amount of cement, combined with about 2,000 psi of hydraulic pressure used to produce them, makes the blocks 100% waterproof and freeze/thaw proof. We could have used less cement (more like 5% or 6%) but we wanted to leave the walls exposed instead of covering them with lime plaster or siding. These 10” x 14” x 3.5” CEBs were produced using an AECT compressed earth block machine! #compressedearthblock #localbuildingmaterial #sustainableconstruction #energyefficienthomes #buildbetter
