A US Navy plane went down on this black sand back in 1973. The crew all made it out okay, but the plane is still out there on Sólheimasandur, slowly getting eaten by the sand, ocean at its back, and nothing around it for miles. You can actually walk out and visit it. There’s a dedicated lot right off the Ring Road, about 6km east of Skógar, marked on maps as the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck parking. From there it’s a flat 4km walk across the sand, or grab the shuttle if you’d rather save your legs. The best memories start where the road ends. In this case it ended at @retrievingatlas’s favorite place, the beach. I took him as far west as I possibly could. Ventured out to one of the last beaches in California you can still legally drive on, but the soft sand was its own kind of problem. Watched multiple people get stuck out here while we ripped it up and down the beach, taking Atlas wherever he wanted to go. My favorite part of photography will always be nailing the shot in the moment, already knowing exactly how it’s going to look after the edit, before I even unload the card. With some images I can picture it in my head as I click the shutter. People underestimate how much actually goes into a good photo. My favorite flower field in California isn’t supposed to be here. Ice plant was brought in from South Africa to keep Highway 1 from sliding into the sea. They found out later that it actually makes landslides worse. It stayed, it spread, and now it’s created one of the most beautiful spots on the California coast, with color peaking late March to early June.
